CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M softball capped off the WT Invitational with a 6-0 win over the Lincoln Blue Tigers led by a cycle from
Halie Stoneking. The Lady Buffs finish non-conference action with a 10-0 record.
Stoneking becomes the first Lady Buff to record the cycle since Kim LeComte did so on in a 15-2 run-rule victory over Eastern New Mexico on March 5, 2011.
With WT playing as the visiting team,
Lauren Granger started the game with a single to short, advancing to second on a throwing error from the Blue Tigers' shortstop. A groundout moved Granger to third where the Lady Buffs' junior exited for a pinch runner. WT plated its first run two pitches later when
Abby Howell lifted a sacrifice fly to the warning track in center field.
Stoneking started her run for the cycle in the top of the second as the Brighton, Colo. native ripped a solo home run off the foul pole in left, setting the WT lead at 2-0. In the circle,
Heidi Vortherms continued to deal, scattering base runners to bring the Lady Buff lineup back to the plate. Stoneking recorded a double in the top of the third, sending the first pitch of her at bat into the gap in right-center field.
In the fourth inning, an
Emily Liskai single and stolen base placed a runner on second with no outs. Granger added to her hit total on the afternoon by sending an RBI double into the right-center gap, scoring Liskai from second. After a groundout moved Granger to third, Howell pulled a double down the left field line to make the score 4-0.
Stoneking crossed off the triple from her cycle checklist in the top of fifth, eventually scoring on
Trinity Kuntz's RBI single. In the seventh, Stoneking completed the cycle when the senior beat out an infield single to shortstop later confirmed by a video review. Stoneking also closed the scoring for WT, crossing home on Liskai's RBI groundout.
The Lady Buffs begin Lone Star Conference play on Friday, Feb. 14 when St. Edward's comes to Canyon for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
