Lady Buffs Sweep Cameron on Saturday Night

LAWTON, Okla. – The West Texas A&M softball team remained undefeated on the season with a pair of wins over the Cameron Aggies on Saturday evening. The Lady Buffs improve to 16-0 on the season and 6-0 in Lone Star Conference play with the sweep.

WT finishes its Oklahoma road trip on Monday, Feb. 24 when the Lady Buffs take on No. 20 Oklahoma Christian for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

THE BASICS
Game 1 Score:
#8 West Texas A&M 4, Cameron 3
Pitching: (W) Emilee Boyer (8-0); (L) Stormee Reed (2-4)
The Lady Buffs struck first in the top of the third when an Avery Cannon single started the inning. Cannon advanced to third before being lifted for pinch-runner Bri Stokes. On a single to short off the bat of Kiley Avery, Stokes crossed home plate to give WT its first lead. Cameron would go on to tie the game in the bottom of the inning when an RBI single from Madysen Boutwell scored Kaiden Boren from third.

A solo home run to left off the bat of Kelsey Creech put the Aggies up 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth before the Lady Buffs regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Boyer started the inning with a single up the middle before advancing to second on Heaven Moreno's sacrifice bunt. A Halie Stoneking hit-by-pitch put runners on first and second where pinch-hitter Cadence Colborn doubled down the line, scoring Boyer from second and tying the game. Cannon plated the go-ahead run after lifting a sacrifice fly to left.

The Aggies tied the game up once again in the bottom of the sixth as a one-out single came around to score on Creech's RBI single up the middle, sending the game tied at three to the seventh inning.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, a Boyer no-doubter to center field proved to be the difference in game one. Boyer returned to the circle for the seventh where the junior retired the side to seal out the win.

Game 2 Score:  #8 West Texas A&M 8, Cameron 0
Pitching: (W) Heidi Vortherms (7-0); (L) Tinley Schmidgall (1-3)
Lauren Granger started the second game of the doubleheader with a bang as the junior blasted a no-doubter of her own to left field. After seizing momentum with the home run, the Lady Buffs got the bats going with back-to-back walks from Kiley Avery and Abby Howell. A double play allowed Cameron to record a pair of outs, but RBIs from Moreno, Stoneking, and Trinity Kuntz stretched the lead to 4-0 before the inning came to an end.

In the second inning, WT added another run as Granger doubled before stealing second. After a pair of outs, Boyer ripped a single up the middle to score Granger easily and make the score 5-0.

The Lady Buff offense would go quietly over the next innings before adding a run in the top of the sixth on a Granger single through the left side.

WT capped its scoring in the top of the seventh as Kuntz reached on an error to third, scoring two runs.  The Aggies broke up the shutout with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as a bloop single scored a runner from second base.

Heidi Vortherms recorded the win after throwing a complete game, allowing just one run while striking out 11.
