Slow Start Dooms Buffs on Sunday Afternoon

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start and cold shooting on Sunday afternoon as the Lubbock Christian Chaps defeated the Buffs, 68-48. The Buffs fall to 9-4 overall and 4-3 in Lone Star Conference play while the Chaps improve to 10-4 and 5-1 in league action.
 
The Leaders
Two Buffs reached double-digit scoring on Sunday afternoon led by a team-high 13 from Ahamed Mohammed. Bob Griechen also ended his day in double figures, scoring 10 points whle pulling in a team-high nine rebounds and a blocked shot. Griechen also converted three steals while Mohammed and Amir McMillian recorded an assist.
 
How It Happened
After a Buffs' free throw 20 seconds into the game, the Chaps rattled off five straight points to take the lead. A WT bucket broke the streak before LCU ballooned its lead to 14 with a 12-0 run. The Chaps' lead reached as high as 26 with 6:53 remaining in first half. After the under-four minute media timeout, the Buffs started to knock down shots, sending the game to halftime with a 43-24 score in favor of LCU.
 
Coming out of the locker room, the Chaps scored the first four points of the half to extend their lead to 23. WT showed a renewed sense of life as a Pagotto jumper in the pain started a 13-0 run, bringing the game back within 10 with 11:47 to play. LCU regained momentum as Ty Casswell made a layup and drew the foul to snap the Buffs' run. The Chaps would close out the game, sealing a 68-48 victory.
 
The Buffs travel to San Angelo, Texas for a road test with Angelo State on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
