GOLDEN, Colo. – West Texas A&M women's soccer couldn't keep up with No. 6 Colorado School of Mines on Sunday afternoon, dropping the match 5-0. The Lady Buffs suffer their first loss of the season and move to 2-1-0 while the Orediggers improve to 4-0-0.
The Lady Buffs held possession off the opening kick, scanning the field for a plan of attack. After working the field, a foul by WT turned the ball over to Mines. Neither team registered a shot until the ninth minute when the Orediggers' Bella Campos saw her attempt go into a Lady Buffs defender. Before WT could clear the ball, Mines gathered inside the box. A Lady Buffs foul set up a penalty kick where Campos buried the attempt for a 1-0 lead. Mines looked to double its lead in the 35
th minute off another penalty kick, but Reese McDermott's shot went wide of the goal. WT held off the Orediggers until the 43
rd minute when Jordan Bowermaster and Kaitlyn Manalili teamed up for an assist on McDermott's goal. As the game went to halftime, Mines held a 10-1 advantage in shots and 2-0 lead on the scoreboard.
After halftime,
Madison Stokes took her chance on goal but watched her chance go high. Stokes would try her luck once again in the 55
th minute where Allie Lundgren stopped the chance for the Lady Buffs. McDermott would net her second goal of the afternoon in the 70
th minute when Ellise Putnam found the forward on the back post. Less than two minutes later, Laura Butler added to the scoring when McDermott set up a left-footed shot into the upper corner of the goal. Mines would cap off the scoring 47 seconds later as McDermott secured a hat trick with a steal and score. With the clock winding down, Stokes attempted to get WT on the board, but the Orediggers defense blocked the shot.
The Lady Buffs return to the friendly confines of The Pitch in Canyon for a matchup against New Mexico Highlands at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20.
