Early Lead Isn’t Enough as #4 WT Drops the LSC Series Opener, 4-3

CANYON, Texas – The #4 Buffaloes plated a run in each of the first three frames on Friday night before a comeback by the St. Mary's Rattlers claimed a 4-3 victory in the Lone Star Conference series opener at Dickson Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.

The Buffs jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning as Paul Wittmann tagged up and scored from third on a Ryan Camacho sacrifice fly in foul territory in right for the 1-0 lead. WT added to their lead in the second on an Elijah Batista base hit to right with one out that scored Rodric Black to make it 2-0.

WT added to their lead in the top of the third inning as Seth Ochoa doubled to the warning track in right field with two outs to drive in Dylan Fesperman for the 3-0 lead. St. Mary's cut into the lead in the home half of the fourth inning on a wild pitch with no outs and the bases loaded followed later in the frame by a Trey Guajardo sac fly to center that scored Easton Parrish to make it 3-2.

The Rattlers took their first lead of the night in the bottom of the sixth inning as Rudy Solis doubled to the gap in left center with one out to drive in a pair for the 4-3 lead. The ninth inning saw the Buffs need at least a run to keep the game alive as Jovan Camacho and Wittmann drew walks to start the frame, a failed sac bunt attempt registered the first out followed by an infield popup before a catch at the warning track in right ended the game, 4-3.

Matt Milner picked up the loss (4-2) for the Buffs, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with two walks and a strikeout in his 5.1 innings of work.

The Buffs and Rattlers continue their series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.
