ODESSA, Texas – The No. 2-ranked West Texas A&M softball team finished off a three-game sweep of the UT Permian Basin Falcons with a 6-0 victory on Sunday. The win improves the Lady Buffs' record to 14-1 overall and 6-0 in Lone Star Conference play with a 10-game winning streak.
The Lady Buffs started the scoring in the opening frame as
Lauren Granger doubled off the wall in center to start the game. After Granger's single,
Brittni Rufus singled in the right side hole to move Granger up. After Rufus stole second,
Emilee Boyer reached on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder, scoring Granger from third. Boyer then stole second during
Diana Murtha's at bat before Murtha walked to load the bases. On another error by the right fielder, Rufus came home but the Falcons recorded an out on the play. UTPB escaped the inning a few batters later after a pair of groundouts but not before the Lady Buffs netted three runs.
After a scoreless second, Boyer started the third inning with a walk. It didn't take long for WT to bring Boyer in as Murtha blasted a two-run shot over the left field wall, giving the Lady Buffs a 5-0 lead. The five-run lead lasted until the top of the sixth where WT added a run. A one-out double from
Emily Liskai put a runner on with one out. Liskai took advantage of a lapse in the UTPB defense as the freshman stole third without a throw. After Rufus walked, the center fielder turned the corner and initiated a rundown for the Falcon defense. After a few throws, Liskai broke for home and scored just before Rufus was tagged out at first.
After five scoreless innings from Boyer in the circle, the Lady Buffs turned to
Ashley Mandell in relief. The freshman turned in two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out four.
WT faces a quick turnaround as the Lady Buffs travel to Wichita Falls, Texas for a midweek series with Midwestern State. The two teams will play a single game at 5 p.m. on Tuesday before playing a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
