CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M women's soccer dropped its season finale at The Pitch on Friday, falling to Midwestern State 1-0. The Lady Buffs end the 2024 campaign with an overall record of 6-10-2 and a 4-5-1 mark in Lone Star Conference play.
The Mustangs attacked the WT back line shortly after kickoff, earning a pair of corner kicks in the first three minutes.
Reagan Heelan converted her first save of the afternoon in the 6
th minute when Sloane Sullivan placed a shot into senior's arms. 15 minutes into the contest, the Lady Buffs nearly took the lead as a counterattack started by
Madison Stokes moved the ball upfield for
Avery Putnam. Putnam found a streaking
Bailey Murray inside the 18-yard box. Murray took a touch before firing a shot to the top corner of the goal, but a leaping save from Allison Dellis kept the senior from finding the back of the net. Despite a flurry of shots from both teams in the first half, the two teams went to halftime in a scoreless draw.
In the second half, the Lady Buffs went on the attack to start the period, pushing for an early goal.
Alexsis Villarreal almost put WT in front as the senior found open space from 25 yards out, sending her attempt just over the crossbar. Midwestern State broke the scoreless affair in the 63
rd minute as Lady Buff foul put the Mustangs at the penalty spot. Lexi Beck stepped up to take the attempt, burying her shot in the bottom left corner of goal. With 15 minutes to play, Stokes put pressure on Dellis as the Amarillo, Texas native sent a pair of shots wide of the goal. Two minutes later,
Alexsis Villarreal came within inches of tying the game when the defender fired a free kick toward the goal. Dellis barely reached the ball, pushing the shot into the crossbar. In the closing minutes, the Mustangs kept action in the WT defensive third to earn the victory.
