CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M men's soccer held off a furious comeback from the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds to walk away with a third-consecutive Lone Star Conference win. With the 4-2 victory, the Buffs improve to 5-6-4 overall and 3-2-3 in Lone Star Conference play.
The Buffs came off the opening kickoff with a sense of urgency, looking to set the tone early. After a pair of shots from the Buffs, the Greyhounds caught WT on a counterattack in the 10
th minute. As Alexandre Meres passed a ball through the defense, Robin Vandewalle ran onto the ball with
Luke Southerington charging off his line. Vandewalle finished the counter with a shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. After the Greyhounds' goal, the Buffs flipped a switch, quickly attacking the ENMU back line. The pressure forced a yellow card on the Greyhounds, but the free kick couldn't find the back of the net. Despite trailing by a goal at halftime, the Buffs held a 10-5 advantage in shots.
During the intermission, WT regrouped and came out with an attack plan. The Buffs netted the equalizer they were looking for five minutes into the second half when
Sharif Mohammed played to
Quintin Benn-John. Benn-John wasted no time ripping a shot as the forward sent a rocket into the back of the net. The Buffs took a lead in the 63
rd minute when an ENMU foul set up a free kick near the corner flag.
Matteo Landais sent a cross into the box where
Theo Bennetts rose above the Greyhound defense to head a ball into the side netting. Although WT controlled the pace of play, ENMU broke through with three and a half minutes to play to tie the game. The Buffs wouldn't let the game remain tied for long as
Zakaria Daaou played a ball through to Landais in the 88
th minute. Landais beat the defense before freezing the goalkeeper with a left-footed shot into the bottom corner of the goal. WT put the game away with 25 seconds to play when Benn-John found
Desire Essis for an open goal.
The Buffs look to continue their postseason push on Saturday, Nov. 2 at No. 13 St. Mary's. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. in San Antonio.
