Lady Buffs Fall at Home to Oklahoma Christian

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M fell to the Oklahoma Christian Eagles 3-1 on Wednesday night in Canyon. Despite a first-half equalizer, a pair of goals for the Eagles in the second half dropped the Lady Buffs record to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in Lone Star Conference play.

The Eagles created the game's first scoring chance six minutes in as a ball played toward the WT back line took a deflection and fell to Caid Jefferson. With Reagan Heelan coming off her line, Jefferson chipped a shot to the front corner of the goal. Oklahoma Christian's early chance came up short as Jefferson's shot hit the goalpost before Heelan covered the rebound. The Eagles scored the game's first goal in the 12th minute when Keeley Bennett and Kyla Lovelace connect on a give-and-go in the attacking third. Bennett's pass went through the defense to a racing Lovelace who finished the ball into an open goal. After scoring its first goal, Oklahoma Christian out-shot WT 6-3 until the 44th minute. As the clock went under a minute to play in the first half, an Eagles' handball set up a penalty kick for the Lady Buffs. Madison Stokes stepped up to take the penalty, burying the attempt and sending the game to halftime with a level scoreline.

After a pair of shots for Oklahoma Christian to open the half, Mollie Ferro pushed the pace as WT looked to take the lead. Nearing the 18-yard box, Ferro ripped a shot where Eagles goalkeeper Breanna Wooten gathered the shot. In the 69th minute, Oklahoma Christian took a lead it wouldn't give up as the Lady Buffs were called for a handball inside the box. Ruta Andrews stepped up to take the penalty and converted the attempt to take the lead. The Eagles would extend their lead with 10 minutes to play as Lovelace received a pass before lobbing the ball over a defender for Evie Munn. After Munn settled the ball, the Oklahoma Christian midfielder slipped the ball around the post for a goal.

The Lady Buffs travel to Texas A&M International on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a 7 p.m. match in Laredo.
