LAREDO, Texas – West Texas A&M men's soccer went on the road and earned a draw against Texas A&M International on Wednesday night. The draw moved the Buffs record to 2-4-2 overall and 0-0-1 in Lone Star Conference play while the Dustdevils moved to 2-3-2 overall and 0-0-1 in league play.
WT tested Texas A&M International goalkeeper Ioannis Koupepides early in the match as
Gabriel Nevarez placed a shot on frame three minutes in.
Luke Southerington converted his first save opportunity in the 5
th minute when Felipe Garcia sent a shot into Southerington's hands. After the Dustdevils' first shot, the Buffs went back on the attack. In a minute and a half span, WT placed two of its three shots on goal. Over the next few minutes, the Buffs continued to be the aggressors on the pitch but couldn't break through on the scoreboard. Before the half came to an end, Texas A&M International sent a crossing pass across the face of the goal but a weak shot allowed Southerington to make another save and keep the game tied.
In the second half, WT pressured the Dustdevils early once again when Nevarez sent two shots at goal in the first three minutes. After Nevarez's chances, both teams settled in on the defensive side of the ball, combining for two shots over the remainder of the second half. After 10 shots in the first half, the second half saw each team take two shots with one on goal from WT. The Dustdevils earned three corner kicks in the second period compared to the Buffs' one but couldn't convert the chances into shots before the final horn sounded.
The Buffs return to the friendly confines of The Pitch on Saturday, Oct. 5 for their first Lone Star Conference home game. WT hosts UT Tyler with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
