CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M men's soccer couldn't overcome a pair of second-half goals from Sul Ross State as the Buffs fell 2-0. The loss drops WT to 2-5-4 overall and 0-1-3 in Lone Star Conference play while the Lobos (5-5, 1-2 LSC) earned their first Lone Star Conference win in program history.
WT came off the opening kick with a few passes before sending a ball up the pitch for
Quintin Benn-John. Benn-John gained possession inside the Sul Ross State 18-yard box where he took on Benjamin Aviles in goal. As Benn-John reached the goal line, the forward fired a shot, but Aviles converted a save to keep the game scoreless less than 15 seconds into the match. The scoring opportunity proved to the be only one for both sides until the 16
th minute when
Rotem Weiss sent a shot off target.
Luke Southerington recorded his first save of the day as the sophomore keeper made a kick save on a low liner off the foot of Zachary Trimming. The remainder of the first half saw each team record a pair of shots with neither squad finding an edge.
Coming out of halftime, the Buffs found the first scoring opportunity of the half. After a corner kick bounced around in the 18-yard box, the ball fell to the feet of an open
Theo Bennetts on the back post. Bennetts took a touch before sending a shot to the near post but missed the target. The Lobos flipped the field after the shot, forcing a handball in WT's defensive third. On the restart, the crossing pass went to the head of Daniel Quickenden who flicked the ball just over the cross bar. In the 51
st minute, Sul Ross State caught the Buffs on a counterattack where Southerington deflected an initial shot by Lewis Coates. The Lobos quickly jumped on the deflection as Trimming buried the rebound. Three minutes later, Trimming added another goal to his record when Jesus Duque found the Sul Ross State forward on an overlapping run. In the 82
nd minute, the Lobos nearly added another goal as Carlos Gonzalez froze Southerington but hit the post. With seven minutes to play, a WT corner kick deflected to
Daniel Burton who headed the ball to the near post where Aviles punched the ball away, keeping WT off the board. In the game's closing minutes, the Buffs couldn't break through for a late goal.
WT travels to Dallas on Saturday, Oct. 19 where a 4 p.m. match with Dallas Baptist at the Patriot Soccer Field awaits.
