SAN ANTONIO – Despite matching St. Mary's in shots, the West Texas A&M men's soccer team couldn't find the back of the net on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Rattlers by a score of 2-0. The Buffs matched the Rattlers in shots at nine and shots on goal with four but prevailed in corners with four.
St. Mary's controlled the tempo off the opening kick, but WT held the Rattlers at bay. The St. Mary's pressure reached its peak just before the 10-minute mark when the Rattlers took possession in their attacking third. After a yellow card inside the box, St. Mary's Cian Foley placed the penalty kick in the bottom corner of the goal, giving the Rattlers an early advantage. The Buffs started to find an offensive foothold shortly after the goal, advancing up the field.
Keaton Hartman registered WT's first shot of the game in the 16
th minute only to be saved by StMU goalkeeper Andre Schaefli.
Despite the one-goal difference, the Buffs continued to pressure the Rattlers in the opening stages of the second half. St. Mary's worked a free kick in the 53
rd minute of play, but WT goalkeeper
Asaf Kristal came off his line to smother the aerial pass. Kristal's clearance led to offensive opportunities in the attacking third of the field for the Buffs. WT's first scoring opportunity after the clearance came off a corner kick which forced Schaefli off his line to punch the ball out of danger. Schaefli's punch landed at the feet of
Dylan Watson, but Watson sent the ball over the crossbar. A few moments later, WT forced another corner kick, but the St. Mary's defense stood tall once again. The Rattlers took advantage of misplayed ball by the WT defense in the 71
st minute when Foley intercepted a Buff pass and beat Kristal. Chasing a two-goal disadvantage, WT continued to search for its first goal in the game. The Buffs worked their way up the field multiple times but couldn't find shooting space in the St. Mary's defense.
West Texas A&M continues its season on Sept. 9 at Fort Lewis. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. Central at FLC Dirks Field.
