CANYON, Texas – Nothing went wrong for the West Texas A&M men's soccer team at The Pitch on Sunday afternoon as the Buffs cruised to a 6-0 victory over Adams State. The Buffs extend their win streak to two games and improve their record 2-2-1.
Overall, eight WT players accounted for the Buffs' 17 points with 24 seeing the field in the win..
It didn't take long for WT to get on the scoreboard as
Dylan Watson started the scoring. After a throw in,
Matteo Landais slipped a pass to Watson outside of the box, taking on the Grizzlies' back line into the box, Watson crossed over and fired a left-footed shot past the goalkeeper. 10 minutes later, the Buffs continued their attack when
Venancio Calderon found an open
Josh Beeson inside the 18-yard box. After a gathering touch, Beeson curled a shot around an Adams State defender and into the side of the goal.
WT's third goal came off the foot of
Gabriel Nevarez in the 30
th minute. After a give-and-go between
Matteo Landais and
Adam Szostak, Landais left a pass for Szostak In the box, but the ball went past its intended target. Nevarez didn't give up on the play and retrieved the ball at the end line. From there, Nevarez spun a shot that beat the keeper. The Gainesville, Texas native added his name to the scoresheet 26 seconds late when the Buffs gained possession in the midfield. After a pass led Nevarez into open space, the sophomore sliced through the defense and beat the Grizzlies once again. After 45 minutes of play, WT held a 4-0 lead on the scoreboard and a 19-0 advantage in shots.
In the second half, the Buffs continued to control possession. Less than 90 seconds into the second period, Nevarez sent a pass to Calderon who's one-touch pass went to the center of the penalty box. As the ball entered the box,
Trevor Suggs soared over the Adams State back line and placed a header into the back of the net.
Keaton Hartman capped the WT scoring in the 65
th minute. After a foul outside the box,
Ignacio Barriga's service went to the foot of Hartman who chipped a shot towards the goal. The Grizzlies' net minder made the save at first but couldn't hang on as the ball rolled past him.
WT wraps up its home stand with a 7 p.m. kickoff against Lone Star Conference foe, Lubbock Christian.
