No. 14 Lady Buffs Dominate Mustangs on Thursday Afternoon

CANYON, Texas – The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M allowed just four base runners while scoring 22 runs in two wins over Western New Mexico. In each game, the WT pitching staff carried a no-hitter into the final inning, losing it each time with two outs. The Lady Buffs improved to 34-4 overall on the season and 25-4 in Lone Star Conference play.
 
The final game of the series is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Schaeffer Park.
 
THE BASICS

The Lady Buffs found all the offense they would need in the bottom of the first inning. Back-to-back hits from Gabie McConnell and Ruby Salzman gave the Lady Buffs an early 1-0 lead. Emilee Boyer scored Salzman when the freshman reached on a throwing error. Diana Murtha brought home WT's third run of the inning when she singled into left center. Western New Mexico retired two hitters in a row and put the Mustangs in position to get out of the inning. Four straight base hits for the Lady Buffs plated five additional runs.
 
WT went scoreless until the fourth inning. A Ruby Moore walk to start the inning came around to score once pitch later as Boyer ripped her 13th home run of the season out of the park. Boyer then went back out to the circle where she held the Mustangs hitless into the fifth. Boyer needed just two pitches to record two outs in the top half of the inning. With a 1-1 count on the batter, Boyer forced a bouncing ball to short, but Johnson couldn't make the throw in time, ending the no-hitter.

In game two, McConnell started the inning with a single before advancing to second base on Salzman's groundout. The Mustangs retired Emilee Boyer and put themselves into position to escape the inning without damage. A two-out single from Murtha plated McConnell and gave WT a 1-0 lead. After Murtha's RBI, Johnson and Megan Guericke singled to push the lead to 3-0. The Lady Buffs' advantage exploded to 5-0 when Julie Guzman sent a home run over the fence with two outs.
 
An inning later, Brittni Rufus sent a ball out on the second pitch of her at bat. With WT up 6-0 in the third, the Lady Buffs executed a double steal to swipe a run. After a wild pitch moved a runner to third, Shyanne Sanchez sent her first collegiate home run out to push the advantage to 10-0. Following the home run, Western New Mexico went to the bullpen. With a new pitcher in the circle, Rufus laid a bunt single down. Rufus stole second before coming in to score on McConnell's RBI single.
 
WT capped off the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning after Heaven Moreno started the inning with a single. On the first pitch she saw, Johnson smashed a ball over the left-center field wall. Going into the fifth inning, Emilee Wilson held the Mustangs quiet as the senior only allowed a single base runner, a walk in the top of the third. Wilson retired the first two hitters but a single with two strikes broke up the no-hit bid.
