CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's soccer couldn't match a pair of Midwestern State goals in the second half as the Buffs fell to the No. 2 Mustangs, 4-2. With the loss, WT dropped to 7-5-4 on the season and 4-2-2 in Lone Star Conference play.
After Midwestern State controlled possession off the opening kickoff, WT stole possession on its own half of the field.
Matteo Landais sent a past through the Mustang back line for a streaking
Dylan Watson. With a defender on his hip as approached the goal, Watson ripped a shot on goal, but MSU goalkeeper Adam Braman punched out of play. The Buffs looked to break open the scoring when Landais broke free but sent his attempt wide. A few minutes later the Mustangs countered the WT attack with one of their own. After a failed clearance from the Buffs back line, Mere Escobar cleaned up the pass and give Midwestern State the lead.
It didn't take long for the Buffs to respond as a cross into the box touched the hand of a Mustang player, setting up a penalty kick for WT. Landais stepped up to take the kick and buried it into the back of the net. Less than a minute after Landais' goal, the Buffs advanced up the field with
Sam Scarth leading the way. Scarth sent a pass forward to
Elhadj Diaoune at the edge of the 18-yard box. Diaoune made his move on the defender and spun to the inside where he fired a shot past Braman. With the Buffs leading, Midwestern State coordinated an attack inside the box with a minute and a half to play in the first half. After a crossing pass bounced around inside the box, it looked the Buffs cleared the ball off the goal line, but the officials ruled in favor of the Mustangs. Despite being tied at half, the Buffs held a 10-4 advantage in shots.
After halftime, Midwestern State came out as the aggressors as the Mustangs stole possession near field. MSU netted its third goal of the game in the 48
th minute as Escobar found Gabriel Gacovicaj. 10 minutes later, the Mustangs took advantage of defensive lapse as Gacovicaj centered a ball for Dereck Espinal. Espinal curled a shot through the defense and past
Asaf Kristal. After the pair of goals, momentum shifted into the hands of Midwestern State as the Buffs couldn't string together promising attacks. Watson attempted to score WT's first goal of the second half in the 69
th minute when he curled a shot from the corner of the penalty box. Just before the ball went into the corner of the goal, Braman made a leaping save to push the ball over the goal. Over the game's final 15 minutes, Midwestern State controlled possession and held off WT to seal the victory.
The Buffs end the regular season at home against St. Edward's on Wednesday, Nov. 1. WT hosts the Hilltoppers at 6 p.m. with Senior Day recognition occurring at halftime.
