CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes battled back from a nine-point deficit in the second half to lead by six before the Western Oregon Wolves scored with just two seconds remaining to leave Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium with a thrilling 37-36 victory in front of over 6,500 fans in Canyon. Â

The Wolves jumped out to an early lead as they converted on a pair of thirds down including a Gannon Winker 53-yard completion to Keyvaun Eady to setup a two-yard Dominique Loggins touchdown run for the 7-0 lead. The teams traded punts before a short-field for the Buffs turned into points as
Kanon Gibson called his own number from 36-yards out to make it 7-7.

The Buffs took advantage of another short field later in the first quarter as a 24-yard strike from Gibson to
Tyrie Tipton setup a five-yard pass from Gibson to
Brennan Ray to make it 14-7. The Wolves responded with a big play of their own as Winker found Brenden Hodge for a 52-yard touchdown to tie it at 14-14.

WT used their special team unit to retake the momentum as
Cade Cox blocked a Western Oregon punt late in the second quarter with
Tory Simmons falling on the ball to setup a WT drive, Gibson did the rest as he found
Tyrie Tipton from 30-yards out to make it 21-21 headed into the locker room.

Western Oregon would start the second half with a spark as an errant snap on a Buffalo punt led to a safety followed by a short-field drive as Winker found Eady from 24-yards out to give the Wolves the 30-21 lead. The Buffalo defense showed life later in the quarter as
Koby King knocked the ball loose and
JT Cavender picked up the fumble and took it 65 yards to make it 30-28.

The Buffs would force a punt to setup a nine-play drive but WT couldn't come away with points as a missed 46-yard field goal kept it at 30-28. WT's defense would continue to make stops as a WOU punt setup a 68-yard drive capped off by Gibson taking it into the endzone from nine yards out to go along with a two-point conversion for the 36-30 lead.

The Wolves wouldn't go down without a fight as they put together a long drive of their own to get down to the WT 2-yard line with the clock winding, the Buffs would force a fourth and goal with just six seconds remaining before Winker found Hodge on a pick-play followed by the Charlie Shulkin PAT for the 37-36 lead.Â

The Buffs made it interesting on their final drive as a roughing the passer call would put WT in position to win the game but a 44-yard field goal try was wide right to end the game, 37-36.

Gibson finished the game completing 18-of-29 passes for 176 yards and a pair of touchdowns to go along with 12 carries for a team-high 69 yards and two more scores.
Kenneath Redd Jr. caught four passes for 34 yards while Tipton finished the game with three catches for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively,
Jimmy Harrison registered 19 total tackles (nine solo) with two of those coming for a loss followed by Cavender and
Preston Steszewski with 10 tackles each while Cavender also had a fumble return for a toucchdown.

The Buffs hit the road next weekend as they head south to take on the #16 Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. at Javelina Stadium. TAMUK dropped their first contest of the season on Saturday night to UT Permian Basin in Odessa, 29-17.Â
