Buffs Comeback Bid Falls Short Against Mustangs

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's basketball team saw their win streak come to an end on Saturday against the Midwestern State Mustangs. The Buffs (14-6, 12-2 LSC) couldn't come back in the closing stages of the game as the Mustangs (10-11, 7-8 LSC) defended their home court.

The Leaders
Zach Toussaint led WT with 24 points on 7-of-18 shooting including 5-of-10 from three and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Larry Wise reached double figures once again for the Buffs, scoring 20 points while bringing in six rebounds and a block. Brock Mishak added in 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting including 2-of-2 from deep.

How It Happened
Offense came hard to find for both teams in the game's opening minutes. Midwestern State got on the board first after a pair of free throws, but the first field goal didn't come until the 16:48 mark. From that point the Mustangs' Pierre Sanders went on an offensive tear. Including the field goal at 16:48, Sanders went on to score 15 of Midwestern State's next 16 points. A pair of three pointers by Toussaint allowed the Buffs to cut into the Mustang lead. Midwestern State stretched the gap before WT cut into the lead once more, trailing by four at the break.

The Buffs came out with a sense of urgency to start the second half. Toussaint sank a three from deep, giving WT its first lead of the day. Midwestern State responded with a huge run of their own to extend the lead back to double digits. The Mustangs reached a game-high 17-point lead, but that didn't stop the Buffs from fighting back.

In the final two minutes of the game, WT had the game within striking distance, drawing within four points twice. Just when the Mustangs looked to be putting the game away, the Buffs trimmed back the lead. Unfortunately for WT, the clock ran out before the Buffs could string one final push.
