Long Ball Leads No. 22 Lady Buffs to Sweep Over Western New Mexico

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The No. 22 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs hit six home runs on Sunday afternoon as they swept Western New Mexico at Mustang Field in Silver City, N.M.  WT improves to 27-14 overall (16-12 LSC) while WNMU falls to 5-37 (2-26 LSC).
 
WT will face Eastern New Mexico on Saturday, April 30, in conference crossover action for the final tuneup before the Lone Star Conference Championships.  The Lady Buffs will face the Greyhounds in Portales, N.M. with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. CT. 
 
THE BASICS
Game 39 Score: West Texas A&M 10, Western New Mexico 1
Pitching: (W) Heidi Vortherms (12-6); (L) Julia Vega (0-12)
 
Braeland Booth and Diana Murtha led off scoring in game one for the Lady Buffs as the duo went back-to-back with solo home runs in the first to take hold of a 2-0 lead over the Mustangs.  Western New Mexico cut the lead to one with a grounder to the mound but was immediate responded in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to left from Megan Guericke. 
 
The Lady Buffs took control in the fourth using five hits to extend their lead out to six.  Nikki Warren led off the inning with a double into left center before coming across the plate on Ruby Salzman's hit into left.  WT took advantage of an error by the shortstop for pinch runner Justine Navarra to tag another run to the board before Diana Murtha slid home on a wild pitch.  The final run of the inning came from Julie Guzman's shot up the middle to bring home Madison Johnson to make it 7-1. 
 
In her fourth at bat, Booth launched her second home run of the day into left to score Salzman after the junior doubled.  Johnson sent out the fourth homer of the game and her sixth of the season to push the Lady Buffs lead out to nine, 10-1. Halle Lytal struck out the first batter she faced before forcing to pop fly's in the fifth to shutdown the Mustangs offense 1-2-3, securing the run-rule victory. 
 
Heidi Vortherms (12-6) was rewarded the victory as the freshman and Lytal combined for a no-hitter.  The Lady Buffs recorded 16 hits led by Booth who went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI.

The Lady Buffs opened scoring with a pair of runs as Brittni Rufus led off with a double into centerfield before advancing to third on a wild pitch until the sophomore easily scored on a double from Ruby Salzman.  Salzman would move around the bases before coming home on a sacrifice fly from Diana Murtha.  WNMU responded in the bottom of the inning with a double into left to cut the Lady Buffs lead to one, 2-1.
 
With one out, Murtha sent out her second homer of the day deep and out into left center to push the lead back out to two until singles by Madison Johnson and Megan Guericke made it a 4-1 ball game. 
 
WT took the reins in the top of the fifth after the Lady Buffs positioned runners on first and second to bring Julie Guzman to the plate.  The Reseda, Calif., product sent out her second home run of the season before Braeland Booth hit a shot into left to bring home Rufus, 9-1. 
 
WT outhit the Mustangs 15-6 with six Lady Buffs registering multiple hits led by Diana Murtha and Julie Guzman.  The duo each went 2-for-3 at the plate to go along with three RBI.  Kyra Lair was credited the win after entering the game in the first.  The sophomore faced 10 batters and allowed just two hits through 2.2 innings with two strikeouts.
