LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 16 West Texas A&M's run in the NCAA Tournament came to a stop on Sunday evening as the Buffs fell to No. 22 Black Hills State, 91-77, in the South Central Regional Semifinals. WT finishes the season 29-7 overall while the Yellow Jackets improve to 24-7 and will play the winner of Lubbock Christian and Colorado Mesa in the Sweet 16 on Tuesday, March 15.
The Yellow Jackets took hold of a lead in the opening three minutes of play before a trey by
Cameron Bell evened the score at 7-all. The sophomore's shot was responded with a 6-2 run before
Larry Wise went back-to-back from the deep to end the drought at the 13:36 mark.
The two programs went back-and-forth until back-to-back trey's for Adam Moussa gave the Yellow Jackets an 8-point lead, 28-20. The score got as close as two when Wise added three to the board, but BHSU grabbed a pair of shots in the final moments of the half to lead 47-40 at the intermission.
Zach Toussaint led off scoring in the second half as he knocked down his second three of the game to cut the Yellow Jackets lead to four but was quickly responded with a jumper from Cindou Cisse to kick off a 9-2 run, leading 58-45.
With less the five minutes left in regulation, WT worked to chip away at the Yellow Jackets lead when the Buffs dropped eight consecutive points but the run was snapped with Sava Dukic's layup to push the lead back into double figures.
Wise finished the night with 23 points going 9-of-19 from the floor including 4-of-10 from the deep and 1-of-1 from the charity stripe to go along with eight rebounds. Junior
Julius Brown scored 21 points for the Buffs followed by Toussaint with 16.
The Buffs shot 28-of-79 (35.4%) from the floor, 12-of-41 from the three and 9-of-15 at the free throw line while bringing down 36 boards with five assists and nine steals.
