CANYON, Texas – The No. 22 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M finished the 2021-22 regular season in style on Saturday afternoon as they topped Texas A&M International, 93-69, at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.
The Buffs claimed an opening round bye after earning the No. 2 seed in the Lone Star Conference Tournament with a 11-5 conference record and 25-6 overall. The quarterfinal game is set for Thursday, March 3 in Frisco, Texas at the Comerica Center with tipoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT. The Buffs will face the winner of the 10
th-seeded UT Permian Basin – 7
th-seeded Angelo State first round game.
Four Buffs reached double figures led by
Zach Toussaint and
Julius Brown combining for 39. Toussaint shot 7-of-16 from the floor including 5-of-12 from the deep for 20 points while Brown had eight baskets with a game-high six assists.
Larry Wise (17) and
Jesse Iweze (10) also registered double digit scores while
Dalin Williams grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
WT concluded Saturday's game 32-of-59 (54.2%) from the field including 8-of-24 (33.3%) at the three and 21-of-32 (65.6%) from the free throw line with 37 rebounds, 12 turnovers, 15 assists, seven steals and seven blocks.
TAMIU shot 26-of-57 (45.6%) from the floor, 6-of-13 (46.2%) from beyond the arc, and 11-of-20 (55.0%) from the charity stripe with 34 rebounds, seven assists, 18 turnovers, two blocks and eight steals. Journee Phillips was the leading scorer for the Dustdevils with 17 points while Tiras Morton brought down seven rebounds.
