Late Scoring Leads No. 5 Lady Buffs to Victory in Tournament Finale

CANYON, Texas – The No. 5 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M collected their 10th-straight win on Sunday as they came back to defeat the Adams State Grizzlies, 4-3, in the WT Invitational finale to finish the tournament undefeated for the second year in a row.  WT concludes preseason play 11-2 while the Grizzlies move to 3-6.

After shutting down the Grizzlies 1-2-3 in the top of the first, the Lady Buffs opened scoring for the fifth time on the weekend as Diana Murtha's grounder in the infield scored Ruby Salzman from third. ASU threatened the lead with two consecutive hits but Emilee Wilson struck out back-to-back batters to leave runners stranded on first and third.  
 
The Grizzlies took advantage of a trio of errors in the third to take a 3-1 lead.  Sydney Muniz singled into center to lead off the inning before scoring on a fielding error in the infield to level the score until a double by Belinda Vargas gave ASU the lead.  
 
WT responded in the bottom half of the fourth as Sydney Greeson singled into center field to score Gabriella Valforte from third before Braeland Booth reached on a fielder's choice at second to score Madison Johnson to make it 3-all.  
 
Ruby Salzman hit a shot up the middle to lead off the Lady Buffs offense before stealing second to land in scoring position.  WT capitalized on an error at third to score Salzman to grab the final run of the game. 
 
Heidi Vortherms (6-1) was rewarded the victory on the mound allowing one hit with seven strikeouts while Emilee Wilson earned the start.  Tayler Duncan dished six innings allowing four runs (one earned on six hits with one strikeout. 
 
The Lady Buffs return to Schaeffer Park on March 4 when they host nationally-ranked first UT Tyler in the Lone Star Conference doubleheader series opener in Canyon.
