Salzman Crushes 40th Homer, No. 4 Lady Buffs Shutout UCCS on Sunday

LUBBOCK, Texas – West Texas A&M junior centerfielder Ruby Salzman drove in four RBI including her 40th career homer run to give the No. 4 Lady Buffs a 8-0 victory on Sunday afternoon against Colorado-Colorado Springs in the final game of the Visit Lubbock Collegiate Classic.  The victory at PlainsCapital Park gives the Lady Buffs their fifth consecutive victory as they improve to 6-2 while the Mountain Lions move to 2-4.

After six consecutive strikeouts from Emilee Wilson, Madison Johnson started off with a double up the middle before moving to third on a hit by catcher Shyanne Sanchez.  With runners on first and third, Julie Guzman smoked a ball to the left side to score Johnson for the Lady Buffs to take a 1-0 lead.
 
The bats stayed alive as Salzman launched a 3-1 count into center field to double WT's lead.  With her 40th career homer, the Northridge, Calif. becomes the sixth player in program history to reach the milestone.  The scoring didn't end there as two batters later Diana Murtha sent her third homer of the season deep and over center to make it a 3-0 game. 
 
After reaching on a fielder's choice, Julie Guzman landed on first before advancing to third on a single from Brittni Rufus.  With two outs, Salzman drove her second hit of the game into right center to score Guzman and Rufus. 
 
UCCS's Paige White hit a single up the middle before stealing second before moving to third on a throwing error from behind the plate to give the Mountain Lions their first runner in scoring position but Heidi Vortherms struck out back-to-back batters to preserve the shutout. 
 
The Lady Buffs sealed off the run-rule victory in the sixth with three runs as Johnson's sacrifice fly scored the runner from third to lead WT to its fourth shutout of the season.
 
Emilee Wilson (3-1) was rewarded the victory on the mound allowing just two hits with six strikeouts through four innings while Vortherms threw two innings with four strikeouts.  Braelyne Crenshaw was credited the loss with eight runs (eight earned) on 14 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
