CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M's
Addison Wallace registered the first double-double of the season to lead the Buffs to a 67-56 victory over the Oklahoma Baptist Bison (2-3, 0-0 GAC) on Saturday afternoon to move to 2-2 overall on the season.
The Leaders
Three players reached double figure scoring led by the Cleburne, Texas product with a game-high 17 to go along with five steals, two assists and 11 rebounds for his first double-double in the Maroon and White.
Zach Toussaint scored 14 points followed by
Ahamed Mohammed with 13.
How It Happened
After three minutes of scoreless action, the Bison opened with a 5-0 run led off by Bradley Akhile's shot from the deep until Toussaint added two to the board to end the streak.
Jesse Iweze drove up the lane for two to make it 7-all but was quickly responded with another successful run from the Bison to make it 17-7.
Brock Mishak brought the score within single digits as when the freshman hit his first 3-pointer of the game to make it 20-12 at the 8:58 mark.
With less than five minutes remaining in the half, the Buffs trickled down the Bisons' lead until Mohammed drained a shot from beyond the arc to cut the lead to one before the freshman recovered the ball from a bad pass to find
Nicholas Jett under the basket to take the lead, 28-26. Akhile leveled the score at 28-all until six straight points from Mohammed and Toussaint gave the Buffs a six-point lead at the half.
The Buffs picked up where they left off extending out the lead to double figures with a second-chance three from Mishak at 16:32. Four straight points from
Addison Wallace extended the lead out to 16-points followed up by a layup from
Cameron Bell to keep momentum.
OBU nearly cut the lead down to single digits with a pullup jumper from Caleb Riggs until Wallace sank his lone 3-pointer of the game to help secure the 67-56 home victory.
The Stats
The Buffs shot 35.5% (22-of-62) from the field, 25.9% (7-of-27) from the deep and went 16-of-19 at the free throw line with 17 points coming off the bench to go along with 40 rebounds, eight assists, 15 steals and two blocks. OBU shot 42.0% (21-of-50) from the floor, 25.0% (4-of-16) from the three, and 83.3% (10-of-12) from the charity stripe while grabbing 32 boards, eight steals, eight assists and three blocks. The Bisons' DJ Freeman scored 15 points going 5-of-10 from the field with five free throws while Paul King 13 points and Trey Green led with seven rebounds.
