DURANGO, Colo. – West Texas A&M outshot Western Colorado 21-6 but were unable to find the back of the net in a 2-0 setback to Mountaineers on Sunday afternoon at FLC Dirks Field in Durango, Colo. The loss drops the Lady Buffs to 1-1-0 through the opening weekend of the season.
It was the Lady Buffs who controlled the game early on before Western's Kylie Hickox scored against the run of play in the 10
th minute with a well-placed shot with her right foot. WT turned their attention in finding an equalizer and came close in the 18
th minute when
Reagan Matacale found space down the left side but her shot went just over the crossbar.
Emily Avila's free kick just outside the penalty area was blocked in the 26
th minute while
Asha James saw her shot saved a minute later after she timed her run perfectly to get behind the Mountaineer defense.
James would continue to find space behind the Mountaineer defense to begin the second half but was unable to capitalize as Kaeyla Noble denied her twice.
Kahrena Thompson had another chance for the Lady Buffs in the 60th minute when she found space at the far post but was once again denied by Noble.
Matacale came within inches of an equalizer in the 61
st minute as Noble pushed her free kick off the bar with the rebound shot from
Jessica Diaz being collected by Noble. The Lady Buffs went down to 10 players in the 74
th minute before Casey Ober scored in the 83
rd minute to push the deficit to two goals.
James played the full 90 minutes recording a game-high seven shots, four on-target, with
Maliyah Mendoza and
Jessica Diaz adding three each.
Daniela Estrada made one save her first start of the season.
The Lady Buffs host No. 15 Oklahoma Baptist in their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
