St. Edward’s Forces a Deciding Game Three on Sunday

CANYON, Texas – It was a tale of two games on Saturday afternoon at Wilder Park as both teams used big offensive innings and stellar outings on the mound to force a winner-take-all game three on Sunday afternoon during the opening weekend of the Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship in Canyon.

The Buffs used the long ball to get on the board in the nightcap as Will Fuenning lifted a solo homerun to left field with one out in the bottom of the second for the 1-0 lead.

St. Edwards responded in the top of the fourth inning as they did some damage with two outs, taking advantage of a pair of WT errors to score five runs for the 5-1 lead. WT answered back in the home half of the fourth as Ryan Johnson doubled down the left field line to score Kennedy Badgett with no outs to cut the lead to 5-2.

SEU responded again in the top of the fifth as Kyler Kerlin doubled to the gap in right center field with the bases loaded to drive in three runs followed later in the frame by a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to make it 9-2, the Toppers weren't done yet as Davis Drewek doubled down the right field line to clear the bases again followed by a Kerlin RBI double to left center and a Dylan Macklin two-run homerun to left to run the lead to 15-2.

The Toppers continued their offensive explosion in the top of the seventh inning with three homeruns that plated five runs to extend the lead to 20-2. SEU added another run in the top of the eighth on a Mackin infield single to score Cullen Ainsworth.

Jake Suddreth picked up the loss (1-1) on the mound for the Buffs, allowing eight runs (six earned) on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts during his 3.2 innings of relief.

The two teams will take the field in a winner-take-all "if necessary" game on Sunday afternoon with first pitch set for 1 p.m. at Wilder Park.
