CANYON, Texas – No. 12 West Texas A&M pushed their win streak to eight games on Sunday afternoon at Schaeffer Park with a doubleheader sweep over Western New Mexico. Madison Johnson drove in four runs as WT took game one 13-3 in five innings followed by another victory in five innings, 8-0, as the Lady Buffs improved to 30-10 on the season and 18-10 in lone Star Conference play.

THE BASICS
Game 1 Score: West Texas A&M 13, Western New Mexico 3 (5 innings)

The Lady Buffs were up 2-0 after the first inning with Erica Vessels and Johnson each driving in a run. Ruby Salzman reached base with a one-out single before stealing second and third. The redshirt sophomore would come around to score on a single up the middle by Vessels. After the second out of the inning, Johnson split the outfielders for her first triple of her career and plate Vessels.

The Mustangs got a run back in the top of the second when Bryana Munoz took the first pitch of the at-bat over the fence in left field. Kyra Lair settled back in and struck out the next three batters to bring her total to five. Steph Elliot would restore the two-run lead in the bottom half other with a groundout to second as Maddie Geidel scored from third.

The lead would grow to 7-1 in the bottom of third as Salzman and Johnson both homered. Salzman led the inning off with her 10th home run of the season followed three-run home run from Johnson with Vessels and Alyx Cordell on second and third.

Shanna McBroom led the bottom of the fourth with her 10th double of the season before coming around to score on a single up the middle from Salzman. Pinch hitter Justine Navarra would drive in Salzman later in the inning with a single to the opposite field. Malaya Delfin followed that up with a double to score another run with Julia Guzman clearing the bases with a triple to left center. Kallieah Richerson-Cook would finish the scoring as she grounded out to first as Guzman scored from third.

WNMU would get two runs in the top of the fifth but it was not enough to extend the game as Lair improved to 16-5 on the season after allowing one run on one hit while striking out nine in four innings of work. Halle Lytal finished the game out of the bullpen allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk.

THE BASICS
Game 2 Score: West Texas A&M 8, Western New Mexico 0 (5 innings)

WT put up four runs in the bottom of the first inning, all of them coming with two outs. McBroom reached base after getting hit by a pitch before stealing second on the first pitch of Salzman's at-bat. She would reach base on an error from the third baseman. They would both advance a base on a wild pitch with McBroom scoring on Vessels' ground out to short. Salzman's aggressiveness on the basepaths paid off as she scored on Cordell's bunt with the senior coming around to score on Johnson's triple to right field. Sydney Greeson's sac fly to right plated Johnson to make it 4-0 in favor of the Lady Buffs.

After stranding McBroom at third in the bottom of the second on her seventh triple of the season, WT would double their lead in the third inning on Geidel's grand slam. Cordell, Johnson and Greeson all reached with one out before Geidel took the first pitch of the at-bat to the opposite field for the Lady Buffs second grand slam of the season.

Emilee Wilson picked up her 10th win of the season after allowing one hit and four strikeouts in four innings of action.
