CANYON, Texas – Qua Grant recorded a 34-point, 12 rebound double-double as No. 8 West Texas A&M won their record fourth straight Lone Star Conference Championship over St. Edward's. The Buffs shot 52.9 percent from the floor, 55.2 percent from 3-point range and 87.0 percent from the free throw line as they defeated the Hilltoppers in the final for the second straight year, 108-89.
Grant was named Tournament Most Valuable Player after posting a career-high 34 points and 12 rebounds with six assists. He went 11-of-15 from the floor, 5-of-8 from 3-point range and 7-of-9 from the free throw line as he scored over 30 points for the third time in his career. Joel Murray and Zach Toussaint were also named to the All-Tournament after combining for 38 points. Murray finished with 20 points and six rebounds with Zach Toussaint scoring 18 after going 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Kavon Booker had a career-high 12 points with five rebounds and three blocks.
The Hilltoppers scored the opening five of the game as the Buffs turned the ball over in their opening two possessions. Murray would get the Buffs on the board with a pullup 3-pointer to spark a run to tie the game at 8-all.
WT continued to trail for the next minutes until Toussaint hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Buffs a 22-18 at 12:50. They would stretch the lead to six, 27-21, two minutes later when Hayden Blankley connected on one of his two 3-pointers.
The two teams would continue to trade until the Buffs went on a 10-2 run to finish the first half. Blankley hit another 3-pointer followed by a Fastbreak layup from Grant. Following free throws from SEU's Daniel Venzant, Murray hit a driving layup before Grant hit a pullup 3-pointer to put the Buffs up 53-46 at half.
WT scored the first four points of the second half to push the lead to double figures for the first time in the game, 57-46, and force a SEU timeout. They would continue to expand the lead with a 9-1 run a few minutes to make it a 16-point game, 68-52, on a pair of free throws from Murray. SEU's Sean Phillips would hit back-to-back 3-pointers on the Hilltoppers next two possessions to cut the lead to 10.
The lead would get as low as eight, 75-67, with 12:11 remaining in regulation but Toussaint hit a three to push the lead back to double figures and restore the momentum for the Buffs. It was once again a 10-point game with under six minutes left before WT went on a 12-3 run to secure their fourth straight title.
The Buffs earned the LSC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II men's basketball tournament and will learn their seed during the selection show scheduled for Sunday, March 7, a 9:30 p.m. CT.
