CANYON, Texas – More than 1,000 elementary students from the Texas Panhandle area were in attendance on Monday morning as the No. 4 Buffs of West Texas A&M reached triple figures for the first this season with a 121-40 victory over Champions College.
Torian Harris posted a career-high 20 points for WT to move to 11-1 overall, including a 10-0 mark at home.
The Buffs opened the first five minutes with a 21-0 run after shooting 11-for-14 from the floor. Just 30 seconds after entering the game, Harris caught a lobbed pass from
Dalin Williams and dunked the ball over the Panthers defense to set the tone. At the 15:01 mark,
Trevone Fuller led off a 7-1 run to make it 26 point game, 30-4.
Parker Nielsen would ignite another successful run for the Buffs with the returning freshman putting up two on a fastbreak after recovering position at midcourt. With less than a minute in the half,
Hayden Blankley connected with Harris' 3-point attempt to post the Buffs eighth dunk before WT extended their lead to 61-17 at the half.
The second half picked up with the same momentum for the first with WT adding 60 to the score led by
Austin Shelley with 12 points. The Melbourne, Australia product hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Buffs in triple figures at 7:47.
Harris was the Buffs leading scorer on Monday and first in his career with 20 points going 9-for-11 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers to go along with three rebounds. Four other Buffs reached double figures with Nielsen compiling a career-high 15 followed by Shelley (15), Fuller (12), Blankey (12) and
Jesse Iweze (10).
WT will return to NCAA action on Friday, Dec. 17, against MSU Billings in Nevada at the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic at the South Point Hotel. The two-day round-robin tournament will end with a matchup against Lindenwood on Saturday, Dec. 18.
