CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M's
Zach Toussaint dropped a career-high 27 points against Midwestern Start on Monday night in the No. 3 Buffs 94-74 win. The victory extends WT's win streak out to eight against the Mustangs as the Buffs improve to 6-1 on the season while the Mustangs move to 2-2.
The Johnsburg, Ill. product shot 11-for-19 from the floor including a career-high five threes to post 27 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Four other Buffs reached double figures with
Larry Wise totaling 14 followed by Brown (12), Shelley (11), and Iweze (10).
Dalin Williams and
Addison Wallace each had six rebounds for a WT roster that collected 40 as a team.
WT came out the gates in the first half with a 14-2 lead in the opening four minutes to take control of the game. Just 17-seconds after tipoff,
Larry Wise found
Jesse Iweze under the basket for the freshman to dunk on the Mustangs defense to ignite a 12-2 run.
MSU's Jordan Teal would make it an eight point game with a three-point play at 13:43 before the Buffs responded with a 9-0 run that led up to a 52-28 score at the end of the half.
The Buffs pushed out to their largest margin at the 10:39 mark with back-to-back dunks by
Kavon Booker and
Dalin Williams to extend WT's lead out to 30, 71-41. MSU strung together a 7-0 run but freshman
Jonas Carlisle ended the streak with his first career shot from the deep.
Trevone Fuller recorded the final points of the night with WT's 12
th 3-pointer of the night to set a new season-high for the team.
WT finished the night shooting 45.8 percent from the field (33-for-72) and 35.3 percent (12-for-34) from beyond the arc while shooting 16-for-18 (88.9%) at the charity stripe.
The Mustangs were led by Jermane Carter who posted a game-high 28 points while MSU shot 39.7 percent (25-for-63) from the floor, 31.6 percent (6-for-19) from the deep, and 81.8 percent (18-for-22) from the free throw line.
West Texas A&M will continue their three-game home stand at the First United Bank Center this weekend when they host the annual Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 26-27. The tournament features four Division II programs with WT, Oklahoma Baptist, Southwestern Oklahoma State and Eastern New Mexico.
