Lady Buffs Face Oklahoma Christian in the Lone Star Conference Quarterfinals

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M volleyball prepares for the program's 27th postseason appearance as the Lady Buffs set out to San Angelo for the 2021 Lone Star Conference Championships on Nov. 18-20 hosted by top-seeded Angelo State.  The Lady Buffs will take on No. 12 seeded Oklahoma Christian on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Junell Center. 
 
THE LSC TOURNAMENT
The top 12 teams from the regular season advanced to the conference tournament with Angelo State earning the No. 1 seed followed by UT Tyler, Lubbock Christian and WT to all earn automatic bids to the quarterfinal matches.  Four teams from the opening round moved on to the quarterfinal matches on Thursday.  The opening round saw two upsets as No. 12 Oklahoma Christian took down No. 5 Texas A&M-Commerce and No. 10 St. Edward's defeated No. 7 UAFS.

THE EAGLES
Oklahoma Christian enters the LSC Quarterfinals after upsetting Texas A&M Commerce in a five set opening round thriller on Tuesday night.  In the upset victory, the Eagles collected 140 digs with 75 kills, 68 assists and 16 total blocks.  Allyssa Hamlin led OC's offense with 18 kills on 70 attempts to hit .229 in the upset while Brylie Berryman posted 42 digs and Spencer Plato had 32 assists. 
 
The Eagles are led by first year head coach, and former Lady Buff head coach, Jason Skoch.  Prior to his time with OC, he guided six programs to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight including West Texas A&M. 
 
Five players average above two points per set led by Morgan Demuth with 2.60.  Demuth has totaled 229 kills this season and averages 2.03 kills per set and has a team-high 85 blocks.  Berryman leads the backrow, averaging 4.85 digs per set as the Amarillo product has collected 475 this season. 
 
THE LAST MEETING
In their first meeting in program history, WT swept past Oklahoma Christian with scores of 25-14, 27-25, and 25-21 to claim the opening series victory.  The Lady Buffs hit .218 against OC with 43 kills on 110 attempts alongside four service aces and seven blocks.  WT's defense limited the Eagles to just 29 kills on 113 swings for a .071 attack-percentage. 
 
LUCKY NUMBER 27
The Lady Buffs head to their 27th overall and 17th straight appearance in the Lone Star Conference tournament.  Last season, WT advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Texas A&M International, 3-1, in the opening round before falling to UT Tyler, 3-0. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
WT finished the regular season 20-4 overall and 14-3 in conference play after recording a pair of sweeps over Texas Woman's and DBU this past weekend to earn the fourth seed of the LSC tournament.  Torrey Miller led the weekend with 20 kills while Sadie Snay paced the offense with 30 assists.  Chandler Vogel posted 30 digs with Marjani Stanfill leading at the net with 11 total blocks.  
 
ALL-TIME GREAT
Vogel became the program's all-time digs leader after moving past former Lady Buff standout Lauren Beville who played from 2009-2012 and registered 2,423 digs.  The Hereford product picked up 30 digs in the WT's last outing and now has moved her career total to 2,531. 
 
A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS
WT is second in the conference in hitting percentage at .250 with the Lady Buffs averaging 13.7 kills per set and limiting opponents to hit .099.  As a team, WT collects 12.6 assists, 1.5 aces, 17.7 digs, and 2.5 blocks per set.  
 
Torrey Miller has a team-high 4.34 points per set as the sophomore averages 3.83 kills followed by Kayla Elliott with 2.19 (pt/s) with a team-high 27 aces.  Junior Sadie Snay paces the offense with 5.67 assists while senior Chandler Vogel records a team-high 4.94 digs. 
 
WELCOME TO THE BLOCK PARTY!
WT has collected 201 blocks on the season averaging 2.45 which ranks first in the Lone Star Conference led by Kayla Elliott and Marjani Stanfill.  The two middle blockers have combined for 134 blocks Stanfill holding a team-high 74.    
 
WT HEAD COACH KENDRA POTTS
Kendra Potts is in her third season at the helm of Lady Buff Volleyball with an overall 52-15 record.  Potts led her alma mater to the South Central Regional Quarterfinals during her first season in 2019 to become just the fourth head coach in program history to guide WT to the NCAA Tournament during their first season.
