West Texas A&M Falls on the Road at Western Oregon, 41-38

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M made their longest road trip in over two decades on Saturday as the Western Oregon Wolves used a late touchdown to top the Buffs, 41-38 at McArthur Field in Monmouth, Oregon.
 
Nick Gerber finished the night going 17-of-31 thru the air with 235 yards and a touchdown while throwing two interceptions, the junior also rushed 11 times for 82 yards and three scores. Khalil Harris carried the ball 21 times for 193 yards and a score while Tyrie Tipton caught eight passes for 123 yards and a score in the loss. Defensively, Eric Collins, Cole Oster and Satchel Escalante registered nine tackles each.
 
The Buffs forced a WOU punt on the first possession of the game as WT turned that stop into points, Gerber led the Buffs down the field and ended the drive with a one-yard touchdown run for the early 7-0 lead. WOU responded with a long drive of their own as Omari Land capped off a nine-play and 88 yard drive with a three yard rushing TD to make it 7-7.
 
WT responded at the end of the first quarter as Gage Urias connected on a 31-yard field goal for the 10-7 lead. Gerber picked up his second rushing touchdown of the game midway thru the second as the Levalland product found the endzone from three yards out to make it 17-7 with 6:49 left in the half.
 
Western Oregon answered back as Ryan Worthey found Thomas Wright for a 56-yard TD pass with 6:00 left in the half followed by a WT punt and another Land rushing score, this time from one yard out for the 21-17 lead heading into the locker room.
 
Tipton registered his first career touchdown catch in the third quarter, a one-yard pass from Gerber before the Wolves answered again. Worthey found Murphy from 19 yards out to give WOU a 28-24 lead. Gerber would find the endzone for the third time with 8:54 left in the game with a one yard TD run to give WT the 31-28 lead.
 
Land tallied his third rushing TD of the game with 5:17 remaining as the junior from Oakland found the endzone from five yards out for the 34-31 lead. The Buffs used a 75 yard Harris run up the middle to give WT the 38-34 advantage with 4:38 remaining. The Wolves continued to spread it out offensively as they marched down the field as Andrew Valladares score from eight yards out with just 17 seconds left on the clock for the 41-38 win.
 
The Buffs return home next Saturday night as they host the Angelo State Rams in Lone Star Conference action with kickoff set for 7 p.m. at Buffalo Stadium for Homecoming in Canyon.
