No. 19 West Texas A&M Drop Heartbreaker to Texas Woman’s

CANYON, Texas – No. 19 West Texas A&M surrendered a halftime lead for the second time this season on Saturday in their 5-4 overtime loss to Texas Woman's at The Pitch. The Lady Buffs drop to 8-4-0 on the season and 4-3-0 in Lone Star Conference play.

WT got off to a near perfect start as Emily Avlla scored for the third straight game to give the Lady Buffs a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. TWU's Alexandra Jacinto had no chance as Avila sent the free kick to the upper 90 for her seventh of the season.

Ashley Silvestre would double the advantage in the 20th minute with her first goal of the season. Reagan Matacale started the goal as she beat her defender to the end line before finding Silvestre for an easy goal, her first since her collegiate debut against CSU-Pueblo on Sept. 5, 2019.

TWU would get a goal back in the 25th minute as Rayne Islas took advantage of a failed clearance from the Lady Buffs. Hannah Kelley-Lusk would restore the two-goal advantage in the 35th minute with a right-footed strike from just outside the penalty area. The senior would make it a 4-1 game in the dying moments of the first half after taking advantage of Pioneer mistake.

The Lady Buffs struggled in the second half allowing three goals in the final 22 minutes to send the game into overtime. TWU's Abigail Martinez would complete her hat trick with the golden goal in the 99th minute to hand the Lady Buffs their second straight defeat.

The Lady Buffs finish their two-game home stand on Wednesday, Oct. 20, when they host St. Edward's. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
