LAREDO, Texas – No. 4 West Texas A&M pushed their win streak to 10 games with a 64-54 victory over Texas A&M International on Saturday afternoon in Laredo. With the victory, WT improves to 19-1 overall and 11-1 in Lone Star Conference.
The Buffs saw themselves down six, 13-7, in the opening four minutes as TAMIU's Tom Higgins hit a pair of 3-ponters. They would respond with a 7-0 run to retake the lead, 14-13, on Qua Grant's layup at 12:29.
Another 7-0 run later in the half would push the visitors lead to five points, 21-15, on a 3-pointer from Jordan Collins at 8:25. Jon'il Fugett got the run started with a layup followed up by free throw from John Brown before Collins connected from downtown.
JT Warren would connect on a 3-pointer at 2:20 to give WT their largest lead of the first half, 28-21. They would add a Joel Murray free throw in the final two minutes as they lead 29-23 at halftime.
Murray and Grant spearheaded a 11-4 run for the Buffs in the opening four minutes of the second half to make it a 13-point game. Following a Higgins' dunk, layup responded with a layup followed by a Grant steal which resulted in a pair of free throws for the sophomore. Another steal, this time from Fugett, resulted in a layup from Murray before the sophomore hit another jumper. Grant ended the run on a 3-pointer following a Derrick Geddis steal.
The Dustdevils would not go down lightly as they responded with a 7-0 run of their own to cut the lead to six, 40-34. The lead would be back to double digits 30 second later as Collins connected on his second thee of the game followed by a pair of free throws from Murray after another steal.
WT once again saw their lead dwindle to single digits, 47-43, at 11:11 before responding with a 10-0 run over the next two minutes. A Geddis dunk got the run started followed by another fastbreak bucket off a steal from Fugett. Murray connected from beyond the arc forcing a Dustdevil timeout before Grant made it 57-43 with another 3-pointer. Grant would score the final four points of the game for the Buffs as they defeated the Dustdveils for the first time.
Grant lead the Buffs in scoring for the 14th game this season with 19 points to go along with nine rebounds and four steals. Murray finished with 16 points with Fugett reaching double figures for the 10 time this season with 10 points with four assists and four steals. Geddis pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds with two blocks as the Buffs improved to 7-1 on the road.
The Buffs return home to the friendly confines for the First United Bank Center on Thursday, Jan. 30, to host Western New Mexico. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
