Strong Pitching Leads #21 West Texas A&M to Sweep over MSU Texas

CANYON, Texas – Kyra Lair and Shayne Starkey dominated in the circle as No. 21 West Texas A&M swept MSU Texas on Friday afternoon in front of 235 fans at Schaeffer Park. The duo held the Mustangs to a total of three runs on 11 hits in 14 innings while registering nine strikeouts helping the Lady Buffs extend their win streak to 12 games.

WT returns to action on Tuesday, March 5, when they host the Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian. The two teams split their two meetings this season with the Lady Buffs overcoming an early six-run deficit to defeat LCU in Lubbock on Feb. 26. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

MSU opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning on a double to left field by Carli Woolsey. The bases were loaded after singles from Tucker Caraway, Kelsey Eropkin and Bailey Walmsley before Woolsey sent one off the wall in the left corner. Starkey settled down to get two straight outs and limit the damage.

The Lady Buffs struggled to reach base until the bottom of the third when they tied that game at 2-all. Alyx Cordell lead the inning off with a walk advancing to second when Kourtney Coveney was hit by a pitch. Brittany Cruz later walked to load the bases followed by a sac fly to center field from Kylee Moore. The ball was deep enough for Cordell to score and a throwing error allowed Coveney to score from second to make it 2-2.

MSU retook the lead in the top of the fourth on a wild pitch that plated Turner after the freshman had doubled with one out. WT responded with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to take their first lead of the contest on Coveney's sac fly to right. Erica Vessels double to the right side with one out followed by a walk from Cordell. A fielding error by the MSU second baseman on a hard-hit grounder from Starkey allowed Vessels to score and put runners on second and third with one out. Coveney got enough of the first pitch of her at-bat for a sac fly to make it 4-3. Coveney would add a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when she connected on her sixth home run of the season.

Starkey (6-1) went the distance for the third time this season allowing three runs (three earned) on seven hits while tying a season-high with six strikeouts.

Moore opened the scoring for the Lady Buffs in the bottom of the first inning with her third two-run home run of the season. Salzman extended the inning with a two out single up the middle followed by Moore's shot to deep center after fouling off four straight pitches. Lair was dominate in the circle not allowing more than one baserunner on until the top of the fifth inning. Misty Muniz led off the inning with a single up the middle followed by two straight outs before Daylan Inkman ripped a single past Cordell. With runners on first and second, the freshman got Caraway to pop up on the next pitch to end the threat.

Moore connected on her 10thhome of the season in the bottom of the sixth to add an insurance run after drawing an intentional walk in the third inning. She needed only three pitches to reach double digits home runs for the third consecutive season.

Lair (9-0) recorded her first career complete game shutout holding the Mustangs to four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
