Murray, Toussaint Lift No. 5 Buffs over Oklahoma City on Education Day

CANYON, Texas – In front of more than 2,500 elementary and middle school students from Canyon and Amarillo, No. 5 West Texas A&M defeated Oklahoma City 94-62 on Friday afternoon at the First United Bank Center. Joel Murray and Zach Toussaint combined for 37 points as the Buffs improved to 9-0 on the season and extended their home win streak to 32 games.

The Buffs opened the game 3-of-8 from the floor to lead 9-8 at 14:13 before going on a 8-0 run over the next two minutes fueled by the play of Derrick Geddis. Jordan Collins started the run with a 3-pointer followed by five straight points from Geddis, including an old-fashioned 3-point play of an offensive rebound.

The lead would reach double digits at 12:03 on the first of Toussaint's four 3-pointers following another Geddis offensive rebound. OCU would cut the lead to seven, 26-19, at 8:25 immediately followed by a 13-2 run from the Buffs. Jon'il Fugett's three from the right corner was good followed by John Brown's first career make from beyond the arc. Murray would join in on the fun with a three of his own with Toussaint making a pair of free throws to make it 39-21.

They continued to score at will finishing the first half on a 19-3 run highlighted by three triples from Toussaint to lead 65-29 at halftime.

Qua Grant carried the Buff offense in the opening minutes of the second with layups on consecutive to push the sophomore over double figures for the ninth time this season. The 3-pointers continued to fall for the home team with Collins and Fugett both connecting from downtown as WT lead 82-35 at 14:47.

With their second unit in the game, the Buffs went without a basket for over seven minutes until a Hayden Blankley layup with less than eight minutes remaining in the game. The freshman connected from 3-point range giving him a triple in three straight games accompanied by a pair of 3-pointers from JT Warren as WT won their seventh straight over the Stars.

Murray led the Buffs in scoring for the fifth time this season with 21 points going 7-of-9 from the floor, 2-of-4 from 3-point range and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Toussaint scored all of his career-high 16 points in the first half with Grant, Fugett and Blankley also reaching double figures.

WT returns to Lone Star Conference play on Thursday, Dec. 12, against No. 17 St. Edward's in Austin. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
