Big First Inning Lifts Tarleton State Past #6 WT, 7-3. Game Three Postponed Due to Rain

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The #6 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M gave up seven runs with two outs including five in the first inning as they fell to the TexAnns of Tarleton State, 7-3 in Lone Star Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Stephenville, Texas. The Lady Buffs fall to 17-4 (3-2 LSC) while the TexAnns improve to 14-9 (5-3 LSC) overall.
 
The TexAnns took the early lead in the home half of the first inning as they loaded the bases with a pair of hits and a walk with two outs followed by a hit-by-pitch on a full count to score Nyka Wood, Kaitlyn Thomas singled down the left field line to score a pair followed by a single to right with a WT error to score another run before another RBI single to five Tarleton the 5-0 lead.
 
Shea Ibrahim started off the second with a single back up the middle followed by an Allie Smith double down the left field line to put runners on second and third, Maddie Green singled to center to drive in one followed by a Kylee Moore sac fly to center and a Brittany Cruz RBI double to the right center field gap to cut the lead to 5-3. Tarleton used a pair of WT errors with two outs to add to their lead in the home half of the fifth followed by an RBI single up the middle by Woods to stretch the lead to 7-3.
 
WT looked to rally in the sixth as Shayne Starkey and Shanna McBroom registered walks but TSU's Haley Freyman ended the threat with her fourth strikeout of the afternoon. Ibrahim doubled to left center with one out in the seventh followed by a four-pitch walk to Smith before a line drive to first for a game-ending double play.
 
Kilee Halbert picked up the loss (9-2) for the Lady Buffs, giving up seven runs (three earned) on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Rainfall started in the fifth inning of the first game on Saturday and the umpiring crew and both coaching staffs met between games and agreed to postpone the nightcap, the final game of the series will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the TSU Softball Complex.
