Box Score

Season Stats

CANYON, Texas – Five players in double figures highlighted one of the top shooting nights in West Texas A&M women's basketball history as the Lady Buffs used a strong fourth quarter to put away Cameron, 86-69 Thursday evening for their fifth-straight win.

The Lady Buffs (18-6, 11-4 LSC) shot 62.3 percent on 33 of 53 for the 10th-best shooting night in program history as WT entered the game second in the nation in field goal percentage at a .488 clip.   WT tied its season-high with nine triples in the game, including eight in the first half.  The Lady Buffs were 11 of 14 from the line.

Senior Sasha Watson paced the Lady Buffs going six of 12 from the field with two triples and two free throws, along with season-high nine assists.  Senior Alie Decker tied her WT high with five triples and 15 points.  Junior Madison Parker continued her strong play with 14 points off the bench, along with nine rebounds and freshman Lexy Hightower added 12 points.

Cameron (8-13, 6-9 LSC) shot 43.9 percent for the game on 25 of 57 and was six of 15 from beyond the arc, but did not make a triple in the second half.  The Aggies were 13 of 15 from the line and out rebounded WT 33-22 for the largest margin against WT this season.  Savanna James led all scorers with 20 points on seven of 12 from the field with one triple and five of seven from the line, along with a game-high 11 rebounds and a double-double.

In a blistering first half by both teams, as the Lady Buffs shot better than 60 percent in both quarters and 20 of 31 for the half for 64.5 percent, while draining eight triples, which was within one trifecta of a season-high for WT on eight of 14 from range.  WT was two of two from the line as Decker had a team-high 12 points in the half on four of six from the field – all triples leading three Lady Buffs in double figures.

Cameron shot 15 of 30 from the field for 50 percent, while going six of 12 from beyond the arc and a perfect seven for seven from the line.  James had a team-high 12 points in the half with a triple and Jamie Bonnarens added 10 points with two triples.

The game was frantic from the get go as both teams came out on fire, matching triple for triple early on as the first quarter ended with a triple from Bonnarens at the buzzer as WT tried to hold for the last shot with a layup from junior Madison Parker inside.   WT left just enough time for Bonnarens to hit one at the buzzer.

In the second quarter, two free throws by Caitlin Clancy gave Cameron a 31-28 lead with 7:24 left in the half.  From there, WT turned up the pressure and used a 12-2 run capped on a triple from Decker with 4:12 left and a 40-33 lead giving the Lady Buffs their largest lead of the half to that point.

The Aggies had the answer with a 10-2 run of their own on a jumper from James and a triple from Bonnarens followed by a timeout by WT.  Christina Soriano scored inside with 1:58 left for a 43-42 Aggie lead.  WT closed the half on an 8-0 run with a layup from senior Sasha Watson and an old fashion three-point play from Parker and a 50-43 lead at intermission.

Early foul trouble for the Lady Buff players in the post caused the team to go smaller for much of the second half.  However, the Lady Buffs kept up the offensive shooting they were seven for 13 for the quarter as WT dominated inside in the frame, 12-4.  Cameron was unable to take advantage of seniors Lilley Vander Zee and Maddison Wild on the bench, as both teams scored 14 points in the stanza.

WT blew the game open in the fourth quarter going six of nine from the field in the frame, nine of 12 from the line and making one triple to tie the season-high.  Cameron didn't attempt a free throw in the frame as the Lady Buffs outscored the Aggies 22-12 in the quarter for the 17-point win.

The Lady Buffs close the home stand Saturday at 2 p.m. versus Midwestern State in the First United Bank Center.
