#12 Buffs Fall to Texas A&M-Commerce in a Double Overtime Thriller, 104-103

COMMERCE, Texas – The #12 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M hit 14 threes but dropped their second straight contest as they fell to the Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce, 104-103 in a double overtime thriller inside of the TAMUC Fieldhouse in Commerce, Texas on Saturday afternoon. The Buffs fall to 18-4 (6-3 LSC) while the Lions improve to 14-4 (6-3 LSC) on the season.
 
Carl White started off the scoring with a bucket followed by misses on both ends before TAMUC's first bucket by Jovan Austin but Jordan Evans answered with a transition three from the top of the key at 5-2, DeAndre Carson finished under the bucket followed by possessions on both ends before an Eric Golighty Jr. rebound leads to a David Chavlovich long ball at 8-4. Dorian Armstrong answered with a layup followed by a Lion block that led to a Trey Seymore transition long ball from the wing before Ryan Quaid finished under the bucket heading into a media timeout with 15:49 left and the Buffs leading 10-9.
 
The teams traded misses from deep after the break followed by a Malik Albert hitting a jumper just inside the arc before a Lion foul as Quaid hit both at the line at 12-11, the Buffs turned the ball over as Montrell Little finished under the bucket followed by a Drew Evans transition long ball before a WT foul but Commerce missed both at the line at 15-13. The teams traded possessions before D. Evans hit another long ball followed by a Little layup and a Commerce foul heading into a media timeout with WT leading 18-15 with 11:54 left in the half.
 
D. Evans hit two at the stripe after the break followed by misses on both ends before Little knocked down a three from the wing at 20-18, J. Evans added to the WT lead with a board-and-bucket followed by a Commerce miss as Chavlovich found White for a layup at 24-18. Albert responded with a good move in the paint followed by a Chavlovich bucket to run his career scoring total to 1,499 before a Lion miss and a Chavlovich long ball from the corner to force a Commerce timeout with 8:42 left and WT leading 29-20. The Lions hit a three from the corner followed by another Chavlovich long ball heading into a media timeout with 7:39 left and WT leading 32-23.
 
The teams traded misses after the break before Little hit another from behind the arc followed by a White layup at 34-26, Seymore found Little for a three from the wing followed by a Commerce rejection and a WT intentional foul as Albert hit one-of-two followed by a D. Evans rebound and a J. Evans deep ball at 37-30. Commerce responded with a Seymore layup followed by a WT miss from deep heading into the final media timeout of the half with WT leading 37-32 with 3:47 left.
 
Armstrong hit one-of-two at the line after the break followed by a Golightly Jr. acrobatic layup and a Lion miss from deep but the Buffs gave the ball right back with a turnover, Seymore cut into the lead with a layup as WT called a timeout with 3:01 left and the Buffs leading 39-35. Joseph Prince added to the WT lead with a floater in the lane followed by a TAMUC miss that led to a J. Evans long ball at 44-35, another Lion miss led to a White board-and-score before Commerce responded with a Armstrong three-point play followed by turnovers on both ends as the teams traded misses from deep heading into the locker room with the Buffs leading 46-38.
 
The Buffs were led at the break by Chavlovich and J. Evans who scored 11 points each followed by White and D. Evans with eight each. WT went 17-of-35 (48.6%) from the floor in the first half including 8-of-20 (40%) from long range and 4-of-4 (100%) from the free throw line with 20 rebounds (four offensive, 16 defensive), 10 assists, four turnovers, three blocks and one steal.
 
Commerce went 15-of-34 (44.1%) from the field in the opening period including 5-of-12 (41.7%) from behind the arc and 3-of-8 (37.5%) from the free throw line with 17 rebounds (four offensive, 13 defensive), six assists, five turnovers, two blocks and three steals. Little went 6-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-7 from deep to lead all players with 16 points at the half.
 
Little added to his point total after the break with a bucket before J. Evans hit a transition long ball but Little responded with a bucket and a foul as the junior finished off the three-point play at 49-43, Armstrong found Seymore for an easy layup to extend their run followed by misses on both ends before J. Evans hit another three at 52.45. WT added to their lead a possession later with a Tommy Gove long ball followed by turnovers on both ends before Carson finished a fast break layup at 55-47 heading into a media timeout with 15:57 left.
 
Seymore cut into the lead with a jumper in the paint followed by possessions on both ends before Chavlovich found White for a bucket at 57-49, Albert cut into the lead with a board-and-score followed by a TAMUC foul as Golightly Jr. hit two at the stripe at 59-51. The teams traded misses before Little knocked down a transition three to run his game total to 24 points followed by a Chavlovich jumper at 61-52 heading into a media timeout with 11:41 left.
 
Albert hit one-of-two at the charity stripe after the break followed by a Commerce foul as J. Evans hit one at the line before TAMUC answered with an Trey Washington bucket at 62-55, Chavlovich hit a three on the other end of the floor followed by a Washington transition long ball and a White three to force a WT timeout with the Buffs leading 68-60 with 10:00 left. The Lions hit two free throws followed by a Chavlovich long ball before a Commerce bucket before a WT foul as the Lions hit two freebies heading into a media timeout with 7:36 left and WT leading 71-66.
 
Washington found Seymore for an easy layup after the break followed by a Golightly Jr. bucket and a WT foul as Washington hit both at the line at 73-70, the Buffs missed on their next possession as Washington hit a transition three from the wing to tie the game before J. Evans responded with a bucket in the paint at 75-73. Washington hit another long ball to erupt the Fieldhouse crowd followed by misses on both ends and a TAMUC foul as Chavlovich hit two freebies at 77-76, Washington answered again with a layup followed by an offensive foul call on the Buffs but the Lions couldn't convert as White rejected a shot that led to a Prince bucket followed by a J. Evans steal and White board-and-bucket heading into a media timeout with 3:36 left and WT leading 81-78.
 
Commerce missed the front end of a one-and-one after the break followed by misses on both ends before WT missed two free throws followed by an Albert bucket at 81-80, Quaid responded with a spin move in the paint followed by an Albert long ball and a J. Evans bucket at 85-83 followed by the Lions hitting two freebies to tie the game at 85-85 with 1:27 left. Chavlovich hit a shot just inside the arc to force a WT timeout followed by misses from deep on both ends but the Lions missed their attempt as J. Evans came down with a rebound heading into a timeout with WT leading 87-85 with 21.4 seconds left.
 
WT inbounded the ball as the Lions fouled J. Evans as the junior hit both at the line but TAMUC wouldn't go down without a fight as they tipped in a miss with 13 seconds left, the Lions fouled again as Prince knocked down two at the charity stripe before Washington hit a three with a WT foul as the junior tied the game at 91-91 with 3.8 to play as WT missed a half court attempt to head into overtime in Commerce.
 
The teams traded turnovers to start the overtime period before Washington found Albert for a slam followed by a WT miss and a Seymore fast break layup at 95-91, Golightly Jr. hit two at the line followed by a WT steal and a Chavlovich fast break layup to tie the game at 95-95 with 59 seconds left. Quaid grabbed a big defensive rebound after the timeout but the Buffs couldn't convert as they missed from deep to turn off the shot clock, the Lions missed their game winning chance from deep as the teams headed into the second overtime tied at 95-95.
 
Chavlovich hit one-of-two at the line to start the period followed by an Albert baseline layup and another TAMUC foul as Chavlovich hit one more freebie at 97-97, Albert responded with a bucket to run his game total to 20 points followed by a WT miss that allowed TAMUC to slow the pace but the Lions were called for a charge as Gove drew the foul with 3:30 left. Quaid tied the game again with a bucket followed by a Quaid rejection but the Buffs couldn't convert as they missed from deep, Little grabbed a big offensive board as he finished under the bucket before Prince quieted the crowd with a bucket to tie the game at 101-101.
 
Albert hit two free throws with just over a minute left followed by misses on both ends as a Quaid rebound led to a Chavlovich running jumper in the paint at 103-103 with 14 seconds left, the Lions drove the lane as time expired as Quaid rejected the attempt but the Buffs were called for a foul with 1.6 to play as Albert hit one-of-two to force a WT timeout with 1.4 left. Golightly Jr. inbounded the ball the length of the court but the pass was off target as the Lions took the 104-103 decision.
 
The Buffs went 36-of-82 (43.9%) from the floor including 14-of-45 (31.1%) from deep and 17-of-22 (77.3%) from the free throw line with 50 rebounds (10 offensive, 30 defensive), 18 assists, 11 turnovers, eight blocks and five steals. Chavlovich went 10-of-28 from the floor and 5-of-17 from deep to lead the Buffs with 29 points followed by J. Evans with 24 with 10 rebounds for the double-double while Quaid led WT with 14 rebounds.
 
Commerce was led by Little who went 10-of-17 from the floor and 5-of-8 from deep to finish the game with a team high 26 points followed by Albert with 23 and Washington with 20 while Albert grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double. The Lions went 38-of-82 (46.3%) from the floor including 11-of-27 (40.7%) from deep and 17-of-25 (68%) from the free throw line with 44 rebounds (eight offensive, 36 defensive), 21 assists, nine turnovers, five blocks and six steals.

The Buffs continue their five game road trip on Thursday night as they start off the second half of Lone Star Conference play in Portales, New Mexico with a matchup against the rival Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico with tipoff set for 8:30 p.m. CT.
