ALLEN, Texas  – In a championship game with a feel of the last time the two teams played, No. 2-seed Angelo State pulled out a 68-65 double overtime win Saturday afternoon in the 2016 Lone Star Conference Championship.  With the loss, WT falls to 26-4 on the year, while Angelo State improves to 22-7.  The Lady Buffs will await an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament as the parings will be announced tomorrow at 9 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.

The last time the two teams played they needed three overtimes as Angelo State won 112-111 in Canyon on Feb. 3.  In that game, it was more of an offensive game as this game the teams struggled offensively in a defensive battle.  ASU won the opener 69-65 in San Angelo in January.

WT was led by 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists from junior Sasha Watson who was named to her second-straight LSC All-Tournament Team.  Also named to the All-Tournament Team was junior Maddison Wild as she tallied her second-straight double-double with 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, including 11 a career-high 11 offensive rebounds.  Watson was 7 of 16 from the field and 9 of 10 from the line.  Senior Michaela Neuhaus added 11 points, but was 4 of 20 from the field and 3 of 16 from beyond the arc.

The Lady Buffs really struggled offensively shooting a season-low .293 percent from the field on 22 of 75.  They were 8 of 35 from beyond the arc which was a season-high for triples attempted and went 13 of 14 from the line.  WT tallied a season-high 28 offensive rebounds and 51 for the game, outrebounding ASU 51-42.

The Rambelles, who won all three season meetings with the Lady Buffs, claim their fifth LSC Tournament title (5-2), while WT now stands at 13-7 in the championship game and 49-15 all-time in the LSC Championship.

ASU was led by Jasmine Prophet who was named Most Valuable Player as she had 21 points and 14 rebounds going 8 of 16 from the field and 5 of 7 from the line.  Lexi Murphy had 20 points off the bench on 6 of 12 from the field and 3 of 6 from beyond the arc, while going 5 of 5 from the line as she was named to the All-Tournament Team as was Brea Mitchell.

Prophet scored on a reverse layup in the second overtime for a 60-58 ASU lead with four minutes left.  Watson was fouled by Prophet and made both free throws to tie at 60 at the other end with 3:37 left.  Murphy drilled a triple for her 18th point and Neuhaus answered at the other end.  Murphy was fouled earning two shots where she made both tosses for a 65-63 lead with 2:21 remaining in the second overtime.

Angelo State started to turn it over on its last three possessions and a scoreless drought of 3:29, but WT went one of its last five.  Watson made both free throws as the Lady Buffs moved within two on the fourth-straight ASU miscue. ASU turned it over once again for the ninth time in the half.  Watson then scored in the lane tying the game at 26 with 2:30 left in the half courtesy of a 9-1 run.

Prophet scored her first bucket since early in the contest to break the tie, but a foul at the ASU end gave Watson two more tosses tying the game once again.  Prophet then had a turnaround jumper in the lane for two more, but sophomore Madison Parker scored inside to knot it at 30 for the third tie of the half.

Following a timeout by ASU with 20.3 seconds left, Prophet had a look at a shot but it went off the back of the iron as the game was tied at intermission.  It was just the third tie of the season for the Lady Buffs at halftime (2-0).
