Evans Drops 20 Again as the Buffs Stay Unbeaten with an 83-70 Win over St. Cloud State

ORANGE, California – West Texas A&M junior guard Jordan Evans scored 20 points for the second straight contest as the Buffs shot 50 percent from the floor in an 83-70 win over St. Cloud State during the CCA Division II Tipoff Classic at the Santiago Canyon College Athletics Complex in Orange, California. The Buffs improve to 2-0 on the season while the Huskies fall to 0-2.
 
The Buffs started off the scoring with a Skyler O'Laughlin jumper followed two possessions later by a Jordan Evans three ball at 5-0, Mark Hall registered the first Huskie points before Ryan Quaid answered with a layup before SCSU scored five straight to tie the game at 7-7. The Buffs went on an 11-0 run with eight of those points coming from David Chavlovich to run the score to 18-7, the teams traded buckets as Drew Evans finished under the basket for a layup followed by a Huskie jumper before J. Evans hit a bucket to run the score to 22-11.
 
Carl White finished off a possession with a slam followed by buckets on both ends before the Huskies responded with a 9-0 run to cut the WT lead to 26-22, Chavlovich knocked down a jumper followed by a J. Evans trey from the wing at 31-22. St. Cloud scored seven of the next eight points before J. Evans hit another three at 35-28. SCSU hit to freebies with with 11 seconds remaining before Chavlovich answered with a trey to send the teams into the locker room with WT leading 38-30.
 
The Buffs were led at the break by Chavlovich with 13 points followed by J. Evans with 11 while Walton and Chavlovich grabbed three rebounds each in the period. WT went 15-of-29 (51.7%) from the floor including 6-of-11 (54.5%) from deep and 2-of-6 (33.3%) from the line to go along with 18 rebounds (four offensive, 14 defensive), eight assists, 11 turnovers, one block and one steal.
 
St. Cloud State was led by Gage Davis with 11 points followed by three different players with four each while Jon Averkamp grabbed four rebounds in the first half. The Huskies went 12-of-31 (38.7%) from the floor including 2-of-20 (20%) from deep and 6-of-11 (57.1%) from the free throw line to go along with 17 rebounds (six offensive, 11 defensive), five assists, nine turnovers, three blocks and five steals.
 
The teams traded long balls to start the second half as Chavlovich stayed hot from the floor followed by Quaid hitting one-of-two at the line at 42-33, the Huskies responded with two free throws before another Chavlovich bucket and a Carl White three ball to run the WT lead to 47-35. SCSU registered the next six points of the game before White drained another trey at 50-41. Jerrod Walton knocked sown a jumper followed by four freebies from the Huskies, Walton responded with a bucket followed by free throws on both ends of the court followed by an J. Evans layup at 59-49. The teams traded long balls again followed by a slam by White at 64-52, O'Laughlin knocked down a pair of buckets to give the Buffs a 69-52 lead with 7:12 left.
 
SCSU hit two at the charity stripe followed by a long ball to cut the lead to 69-58 before Quaid answered with two at the free throw line, Gage Davis hit back-to-back buckets to cut the lead to nine heading into a SCSU timeout with 4:29 left. The teams traded buckets after the break before J. Evans added to his point total with a three ball from the wing followed by free throws from Eric Golightly Jr. and Walton before White put the game out of reach with a slam at 81-66 with just under a minute left. Rylan Gerber went one-of-two from the line followed by a SCSU bucket before D. Evans hit a freebie to end the scoring with the Buffs claiming the 83-70 win.

The Buffs were led offensively by Evans with his second straight 20-point performance followed by White with 17 and Chavlovich with 15. Walton, Chavlovich and White grabbed six rebounds each while Chavlovich dished out five steals. WT went 29-of-58 (50%) from the floor including 11-of-25 (44%) from deep and 14-of-28 (50%) with 36 rebounds (nine offensive, 27 defensive), 17 assists, 13 turnovers, two blocks and three steals.
 
The Huskies were led by Davis with 23 points followed by Scottie Stone with 16 while Davis grabbed eight rebounds on the night. SCSU went 22-of-61 (36.1%) from the floor including 7-of-21 (33.3%) from long range and 19-of-26 (73.1%) from the free throw line to go along with 42 rebounds (15 offensive, 27 defensive), 11 assists, 16 turnovers, five blocks and five steals.
