RICHARDSON, Texas. – West Texas A&M's Geoffrey Kipchumba and Nikolina Hrelece have been named Lone Star Conference Runners of the Week announced on Thursday morning by the league's offices in Richardson, Texas. It is just the third time in school history that WT has swept the weekly LSC awards and first time since Oct. 2013.
"This is a great honor for both Geoffrey and Nikolina," said WT men's cross country head coach Darren Flowers. "Geoffrey is really coming into form and we are excited what the can do in the next few weeks. Nikolina has had a really strong fall and the sky is limit when it comes to her potential."
Kipchumba, the 2015 LSC Runner of the Year, earned weekly honors for the fourth time in his career and first of 2016. The Kapsabet, Kenya native became the first Buff in school history to break 24-minutes over 8,000-meters at the FHSU Tiger Open this past weekend defeating a handful of All-Americans. The junior finished second overall (first collegiate) covering the course in 23:50.9 and 14 seconds ahead of the next closest finisher.
Hrelec made history is just her second cross country race at WT breaking Guarner's 5,000-meter record of 17:48.28 set back in 2012. The Zagreb, Croatia native covered the 5K course in 17:35.1 finishing 13th in a highly competitive field at the Tiger Open.
The men's and women's cross country teams will return to action at the Lone Star Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 22 hosted by Texas A&M-Commerce.
