CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs got back to their winning ways on Saturday afternoon as they took a 15 point lead into the locker room and never looked back in a 85-49 rout of Texas A&M-Kingsville at the First United Bank Center in Canyon. The Lady Buffs move to 16-1 (5-1 LSC) while the Javelinas fall to 5-9 (0-4 LSC) overall.
The Lady Buffs started off the scoring with a
Maddison Wild offensive board and bucket on their first possession followed by misses on both ends before a Kyra Bauer three from the top of the key at 3-2,
Madison McLain followed her own miss with a board and score followed two trips later by a Wild jumper in the paint with 7:48 left. Bauer found Kaylee Kana under the bucket for an easy layup followed by misses on both ends and a Michael Neuhaus long ball at 9-5, TaSheena Moore answered with a three of her own followed by misses on both ends before a Neuhaus steal led to a
Lilley Vander Zee layup at 11-8 to head into the first media timeout of the half with 4:37 left.
Sasha Watson drove the lane and finished with a layup right after the break followed by a Javelina free throw before Neuhaus hit another long ball at 16-9, Reneisha Alfred answered with a baseline jumper followed by a WT miss and a Jamesha Wade free throw with 2:19 left in the first.
Hannah Alexander grabbed an offensive board that led to a
Zantaya Davis turnaround jumper to beat the shot clock at 18-12, Davis stole away an errant Kingsville pass but WT gave the ball right back with a turnover with just under 40 seconds left. The teams traded turnovers again as the Javelinas took possession for the last shot but a layup couldn't find the bottom of the net at WT took the 18-12 lead into the second quarter.
WT turned the ball over on their first possession of the second but Davis got the ball back with a steal in the paint that led to an Alexander baseline jumper followed by another Javelinas turnover as Neuhaus hit a long ball from the wing at 23-12 followed by a TAMUK miss and another Neuhaus three to force a Javelinas timeout with WT leading 26-12 with 7:35 left in the second. The teams traded turnovers after the break before an Alexander fast break layup extended the WT second quarter run to 10-0 followed by a TAMUK miss and Davis layup at 30-12, Wade knocked down a pull-up jumper to stop the WT run at 12-0 followed by turnovers on both ends with 3:37 left in the half.
Vander Zee finished under the basket for an easy layup followed by a Kingsville miss and a fast break layup by the Texas transfer to run the WT lead to 34-14, Kingsville answered with a floater in the lane followed by two Alexander free throws with two minutes left. The Javelinas answered with a long ball from the wing followed by a WT offensive foul with just under 40 seconds left in the half, Kingsville hit two free throws followed by missed on both ends as the Lady Buffs took a 36-21 lead into the locker room for halftime.
The Lady Buffs went 15-of-25 (60%) from the floor in the first half including 4-of-8 (50%) from long range and 2-2 (100%) from the free throw line to go along with 18 rebounds (three offensive, 15 defensive), 10 fouls, 12 assists, 10 turnovers, two blocks and six steals. Neuhaus went 4-5 from the floor with all of those coming from behind the arc as the senior led all players with 12 points at the break followed by Alexander and Vander Zee with six each.
A&M-Kingsville went 7-of-24 (29.2%) from the floor in the opening half including 3-of-7 (42.9%) from long range and 4-of-8 (50%) from the free throw line to go along with 11 rebounds (four offensive, seven defensive), three fouls, four assists, nine turnovers, no blocks and three steals. Roher went 2-of-5 from the floor and 2-of-4 from the free throw line in the first twenty minutes to lead the Javelinas with seven points.
The Javelinas missed from deep to start the second half as WT turned it into points with a Vander Zee layup before a Bauer three from the corner made it 38-24, a WT miss from deep turned into a TAMUK fast break layup followed by a Lady Buff turnover and a Bauer baseline jumper to force a WT timeout with 7:37 on the clock and the Lady Buffs leading 38-28. Watson stopped the 7-0 Javelinas run with a layup followed by turnovers on both ends before Roher knocked down a three from the wing to cut the lead to 40-31, Davis hit two freebies followed by a Javelinas turnover but a TAMUK rejection led to another Roher long ball at 42-34. The Lady Buffs answered with a Neuhaus trey from the corner to head into a media timeout with with 4:57 left in the third.
Kana hit two at the line after the break followed by a Davis layup on the other end but a TAMUK miss gave the Lady Buffs the ball back as Neuhaus hit two freebies to run the WT lead to 49-36,
Madison Parker grabbed a defensive board and the freshman turned that into a layup and foul on the other end of the court to force a TAMUK timeout with WT leading 51-36 with 3:26 left in the third. The freshman completed the three-point play after the break followed by an Alexander steal that led to a Watson free throw at 53-36, the Javelinas turned the ball over again as Neuhaus hit a step-back three from the wing before Kingsville answered with a long ball of their own at 56-38. Alexander hit two at the line followed by turnovers on both ends before McLain found Davis under the basket for an easy layup to end the third quarter with the Lady Buffs leading 60-39.
Vander Zee registered a board and score to start the fourth before a Javelinas layup cut the lead to 62-41 followed by a Vander Zee layup, TAMUK missed on their end that led to a Watson pull-up jumper as the shot clock expired with 8:21 left. The teams traded turnovers as an Alexander steal at midcourt led to a McLain fast break layup before Treka Franklin answered with a long ball from the wing at 68-44, Wild responded with a layup followed by a Javelinas timeout with 6:10 left in the game and the Lady Buffs leading 70-44. Wild added to the WT lead after the break with a three-point play followed by a TAMUK miss that led to a Wild baseline jumper at 75-44, Watson stole the ball away at midcourt and finished for the fast break layup at 77-44 to stretch the WT run to 9-0 and give the Lady Buffs a 77-44 lead with 4:14 left.
Kingsville hit one-of-two at the line to end the WT run at 9-0 followed by two freebies from Parker to run the lead to 79-45, TAMUK answered with a layup followed by a Davis free throw before Parker grabbed a defensive board that led to two freebies by the Amarillo native to run the lead to 82-47. Kingsville missed on their next attempt but WT gave the ball right back with a turnover with 1:51 left, TAMUK hit a baseline jumper followed by two free throws from
Reagan Haynes to make it 84-49.
Andee Decker stole away an errant Javalinas pass as the freshman hit one-of-two at the line followed by an
Ellyn Avery defensive rebound to end the game at 85-49.
The Lady Buffs went 30-of-50 (60%) from the floor including 6-of-13 (46.2%) from long range and 19-of-22 (86.4%) from the charity stripe to go along with 33 total rebounds (nine rebounds, 24 defensive), 14 fouls, 23 assists, 15 turnovers, three blocks and 15 steals. Neuhaus went 6-of-8 from the floor and 6-of-7 from behind the arc to lead the Lady Buffs with 20 points followed by Vander Zee (12), Wild (11) and Davis (11) in double figures while Wild grabbed a team leading six rebounds.
Texas A&M-Kingsville went 17-of-45 (37.8%) from the floor in the game including 8-of-15 (53.3%) from deep and 7-of-12 (58.3%) from the free throw line to go along with 20 rebounds (six offensive, 14 defensive), 20 fouls, 12 assists, 21 turnovers, one block and five steals. Roher went 4-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from long range to lead the Javelinas with 13 points in the game while Bauer grabbed four rebounds.
The Lady Buffs hit the road next week as they travel to Commerce, Texas for a matchup with the Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. inside of the A&M-Commerce Fieldhouse. The Lions are currently 8-7 overall with a 2-2 mark in Lone Star Conference play as they take on Midwestern State on Saturday afternoon (4 p.m.) in Commerce.
