Season Stats

CANYON, Texas –  The West Texas A&M baseball team swept a doubleheader Saturday afternoon over visiting Tarleton State as the Buffs improved to 17-10 on the year and 9-6 in Lone Star Conference play.  Tarleton State fell to 9-11 and 3-7 in league play.  WT won the opener 4-2 and the nightcap 6-1 with six runs in the second inning on a complete game from senior Justin Disbro.

West Texas A&M 4, Tarleton State 2 (Game 1)

The Texans began the top of the second with a solo home run to right center by Brandon Villeneuve for a 1-0 lead.  A RBI single by Landon Merka gave TSU a 2-0 lead in the second with nobody out.  A fielding error moved Merka to second and wild pitch advanced him to third.  Following a ground out, WT made a change on the mound as junior Kyle Tinius relieved junior starter Justin McAllister.  A strikeout followed and a ground out ended the threat leaving a Texan stranded at third.

WT junior Matt Cole hit a one out single in the bottom of the second for the first Buffalo hit of the game.  Junior Josh Day belted a triple to right plating the first run of the game for the Buffs and a 2-1 deficit.  From there, senior Aaron Blair blasted a RBI double to right center for a 2-2 score.

A pair of singles put two on for the Buffs in the bottom of the third and a meeting at the mound by the Texans.  A pop out and a pair of strikeouts ended the threat as TSU hurler Colton Burleson got out of the jam.

WT pinch hitter senior Dylan Dyson came up with a two out single and an error plated the go ahead run for the Buffs in the bottom of the fifth for a 3-2 lead.  Junior Matt Cole replaced Dyson at second with a RBI double for a 4-2 lead and chasing Burleson from the game in favor of Hunter Houston.  Houston allowed a single, but got a fly out to leave runners stranded at the corners.

Villeneuve opened the top of the sixth with a double to right center for the Texans.  Dalton Weeks looked to have doubled down the left field line, but it was called foul and then struck out looking for the second out of the inning.  Tinius walked Merka and the Buffs went to the bullpen in favor of senior Paul Lujan.  Lujan got a fly out to left field to end the inning and preserve the 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Lujan retired the Texans in order in the seventh for the victory as he earned his fifth save of the year.  Tinius (3-0) picked up the win in relief going 4.1 innings of three-hit baseball with one walk and four strikeouts.  Burleson (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season in 4.1 innings, allowing nine hits, four earned runs, with four strikeouts.

WT had 11 hits in the contest as March, Cole, Day and Blair each had two hits with the latter three driving in one run each.  Villeneuve paced the Texans going 2 for 2 with a run scored and a RBI.

West Texas A&M 6, Tarleton State 1 (Game 2)

WT loaded the bases in the bottom of the second of the nightcap with a pair of singles and a walk and one away.  Senior Max Brennen hit a single to left plating two runs for a 2-0 lead.  Junior Scott Cooper singled to right loading the bases once again and a meeting at the mound by Tarleton State.  Following the meeting, March cleared the bases with a triple down the left field line for a 5-0 lead.  Blair tripled to left for a 6-0 lead chasing TSU starting pitcher Trevor Renfro from the game.  Troyal Yosko relieved Renfro as the Buffs batted around in the frame.

TSU's Kevin Meredith began the top of the fourth with home run to left for a 6-1 deficit, but that'd be all the Texans would get in that frame.

Disbro allowed three hits, one earned run, one walk and he fanned nine in the win as he improved to 3-2 on the year.  March went 2 for 4 with a run scored and three RBI, while Brennen was 1 for 2 with a run scored and two RBI.

The teams conclude the series tomorrow with a single game beginning at 1 p.m. at Wilder Park.
