Box ScoreSeason StatsSAN ANGELO, Texas – a 3-2, two out RBI single by Cameron Massengill, broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the eighth inning as No. 5 Angelo State defeated visiting West Texas A&M 1-0 Friday evening. With the loss, WT fell to 12-9 on the year and 4-5 in Lone Star Conference play, while ASU improved to 17-2 and 7-1 in league play.
In a true pitcher's duel, the staffs combined for 11 strikeouts and allowed 11 hits with four walks. WT senior
Tyler Gibson (2-2) went 7.2 innings, allowing the Massengill RBI single while scatting six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Steve Naemark (5-0) went eight inning of five-hit shutout baseball, allowing one walk and fanning six. Graylon Brown pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the season.
ASU loaded the bases in the bottom of the second with one out for the first good scoring chance of the game. Gibson came up with a strikeout and a fly out to end the threat and leave the bases full. Naemark retired the first 10 Buffs in order and walked junior
Josh Day with one out in the fourth. A batters interference call and a ground out ended the threat.
The Buffs tallied their first hit of the game in the fifth as senior
Justin Hargrove singled to right and a bunt single followed. A fly out and ground out ended the threat leaving two on base. WT turned a double play in the bottom of the next two innings.
Once again, WT had a scoring chance in the seventh as senior
Jacob Caples began the frame with a single to left. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second, but Naemark came back with a strikeout and Caples was gunned down at the plate on a fielder's choice for the second out. Naemark got a fly out to end the inning.
WT stranded another in the eighth as ASU came to bat in the bottom of the frame. A walk and strikeout began the bottom half. A stolen base and a ground out moved the winning run to third. Massengill singled home the run for a 1-0 lead.
Brown retired the Buffs in order in the ninth for the save. Hargrove led the way with two hits for WT, while six different Rams had hits. Both teams left six runners stranded while WT turned two double plays.
Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., followed by a single game Sunday at 1 p.m., to conclude the series.
