Box Score

Season Stats

KINGSVILLE, Texas  – Four errors proved costly as the No. 25 West Texas A&M baseball team dropped a 3-2 decision in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday at Texas A&M-Kingsville.  TAMUK swept the doubleheader Sunday and took three of four games in the series.  With the loss, WT fell to 9-7 on the year and 1-3 in Lone Star Conference play, while TAMUK improved to 9-5 and 3-1 in league play.

WT had just four hits in the game, left six on base and the four errors led to two unearned runs.  It also was the eighth game decided by one run as the Buffs are 3-5 in one-run games.  The Buffs stranded six runners in the contest as well.

The Buffs scored the first run of the game in the second inning as junior Jace Reese singled up the middle to begin the frame.  Junior Josh Day was plunked by a pitch.  Following a fielder's choice, advancing Reese to third, junior Mason Shiflett hit a sacrifice fly to left to score the run and the 1-0 lead.

TAMUK came right back in the bottom of the inning using a pair of doubles to begin the frame as Clint Wallace scored the equalizer.

The game remained 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth when TAMUK plated three runs courtesy of two WT miscues.  Cline Andrews singled and advanced to second on the first error.  With two out, Wallace reached on an error with two runs scoring for a 3-1 lead.

WT responded with a run in the seventh as senior Aaron Blair doubled to right plating Day who walked to begin the inning.  Following a pitching change with nobody out, Weston Silverberg retired the Buffs in order ending the threat.

The Buffs had a runner in scoring position in the eighth, but was unable to bring the run home and went down in order in the ninth as TAMUK closer Ryan Scott tallied his fifth save of the season and second of the day.

WT junior Brooks Trujillo (1-2) took the loss in six innings of work.  He allowed six hits, three runs – one earned with no walks and he fanned three.  Trey Taylor (1-0) earned the win in relief of Will Abbott.  Taylor went 1.1 innings, allowing one earned run on one hit with one walk.

The Buffs finish the month-long road trip and will return home to host Eastern New Mexico in a four- game series Mar. 6-8 at Wilder Park.  The series is scheduled for a 7 p.m. first pitch on Friday, followed by a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. on Saturday and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
