Season Stats

GOODWELL, Okla.  – The No. 4 West Texas A&M women's basketball team improved to 6-0 on the year with a 74-49 victory at Oklahoma Panhandle State Wednesday evening.  WT won for the seventh-straight time in the series and now is 19-2 all-time against the Aggies.  WT has not allowed a team to score over 60 points this season.

On a tough shooting night against the nation's 12th-ranked field goal shooting defense, the Lady Buffs shot a season-low 37.7 percent from the field on 26 of 69 from the field.  Despite the low shooting, the Lady Buffs had a season-high 52 rebounds, including 24 on the offensive end.  Four Lady Buffs were in double figures led by 13 points from junior Maddison Wild, while sophomore Madison Parker had the team's first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

OPSU (0-6) shot 33.3 percent for the game on 18 of 54.  The Aggies were 4 of 13 from beyond the arc and 9 of 15 from the line.  WT went to the line 30 times, making 19.  Sade Tutson had a game-high 16 points as the lone OPSU player in double figures.

The Lady Buffs came out firing on all cylinders as they started the game 6 of 8 from the field and Vander Zee scored eight of the first 12 points inside for a 12-2 lead with 5:25 left in the first quarter.  OPSU turned the ball over three times during the first five minutes and the Lady Buffs held OPSU to just 1 of its first 8.  Vander Zee, the reigning Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week, opened the game 4 of 5 from the field.

After a bucket from Parker following the timeout, OPSU rattled off six-straight for a 14-8 WT lead with 2:07 left in the first quarter.  Since the quick start, WT cooled off to make just 1 of its final 10 shots for a 16-8 lead through the first quarter.  The Lady Buffs were 0 of 3 from beyond the arc for the quarter and 2 of 4 from the line.

OPSU made 4 of its first 14 shots and ended the quarter making 3 of its last 6.  The Aggies were 0 of 2 from beyond the arc.

WT opened the second quarter on a 10-1 run as OPSU went cold from the field making just one point on a free throw.  Charron Johnson scored inside with 4:42 left in the half for a 26-11 WT lead and the first field goal of the quarter for the Aggies.  The Lady buffs missed a number of bunnies at the basket in the second quarter as WT went 4 of 11 to open the second quarter and OPSU was 1 of 7.

For the half, WT shot 14 of 35 from the field for 40 percent.  The Lady Buffs were just 1 of 5 from range and 7 of 14 from the line.  WT held a 26-17 lead in rebounding and had 10 assists and eight steals forcing the Aggies into 12 turnovers.  Vander Zee led the way with eight points early on, but she didn't score the rest of the half.  She finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds.

OPSU shot 6 of 25 from the field for 24 percent.  The Aggies were 0 of 6 from range and 5 of 8 from the line.  Tutson led the way with eight points for OPSU.  In the second quarter, WT held OPSU to just 2 of 11 from the field as the Aggies scored all but seven of their points in the quarter from the line.

The Lady Buffs came out of the gates in the second half going 5 of 14 from the field for the first six minutes of the third quarter, but held OPSU to 2 of 8 to open the second half.  WT increased the lead to 49-23 courtesy of inside play, but the team wasn't crisp finishing.  Despite the shooting struggles, Vander Zee and junior Maddison Wild both got into double figures as the Lady Buffs looked to push the ball inside with a decisive height advantage.

In the final three minutes of the quarter, things got heated as Oklahoma Panhandle State head coach Charles Terry got a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct and the Lady Buffs led 58-32 heading into the fourth quarter.  Through three quarters, the Lady Buffs led 40-23 in rebounding and 16-3 on the offensive end.

A triple by senior Madison McLain gave WT a 64-32 lead with just over eight minutes left.  OPSU got an "and one" for Tutson for a 64-35 deficit.   Parker had a nice offensive rebound and put back with a foul for a 65-35 lead.  It was the 18th offensive rebound of the game for the Lady Buffs.
