Kaputin and Ouedraogo Historic Performances in Triple Jump Highlight Day Two of Texas Relays for WT

AUSTIN, Texas –
Seniors Rellie Kaputin and Malika Ouedraogo stole the show for the No. 11 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M at the 90th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, presented by Spectrum on Friday afternoon as they both qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the triple jump. The Lady Buffs as a team picked up two automatic qualifying and four provisional marks while the Buffs 4x400-meter relay also ran a provisional time on the third day of competition in Austin.

WT will compete in three meets tomorrow including the Texas Relays, Bobcat Invitational and UNM Don Kirby Tailwind Invitational. A full list of schedules, heat sheets and links for live results are available at GoBuffsGo.com under the men's/women's track & field schedule page.

"We had a lot of great performances at Texas Relays on Friday," said WT head coach Darren Flowers. "Rellie and Malika's performances in the triple jump were amazing but Shanice and Kennedy did great in the 100 as well. Victoria continues to improve in the hurdle and our men's 4x400 relay ran really strong."

Kaputin and Ouedraogo are now ranked 1-2 in the nation in the triple jump after Friday's competition at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Kaputin continues to shine on the biggest stages as he picked up an automatic qualifying mark in the triple jump and provisional mark in the high jump during Friday's competition. Facing some of the best triple jumpers in the nation didn't faze the junior as she finished ninth breaking her own school record in the process while Ouedraogo finished fourth in Section B en route to punching her ticket to nationals.

Kaputin's best mark of the competition came on her second attempt where the Papua New Guinea native broke her own school with a leap of 12.98 meters (42-7). Ouedraogo's best mark also came on her second attempt where she popped of a leap of 12.78 meters (41-11.25) which ties a personal is the third best mark in school history. The duo now lead the nation by than three feet over the next nearest competitor.

Kaputin also picked up a provisional mark in the high jump where she finished 11th with a clearance of 1.70 meters (5-7). She will compete in Section A of the long jump tomorrow. Holly Cunigan finished ninth in her section of the shot put with a throw of 13.77 meters (45-2.25) on her first attempt.

Kennedy Hudson and Shanice Cameron both picked up provisional times in the 100-meter dash running 11.84 to finish 43rd and 45th respectively. Hudson's time also tied Bri Leeper's freshman record from 2012 as the Houston, Texas native finished fourth in her heat. Todd Handley had a strong performance for the Buffs in the 100m dash running a wind-aided 10.68 to finish fifth in his heat and 62nd overall.

Victoria Rausch picked up a provisionally qualifying mark it the 100-meter hurdles running 14.24 to finish fifth in her heat and 38th overall. Madison Thetford also performed well as the freshman ran a personal best time of 14.41 to finish 41st. In the men's 110-meter hurdles, Jacob Norris finished 33rd in a seasonal best time of 14.96.

Tobia Lahbi, Steven Cooper, Lachie Calvert and Daniel Gyasi picked up the a provisional mark in the 4x400m relay as they ran 3:12.92 to finish third in his heat and 11th overall. The quartet of Cameron, Kaitlin Rodriguez, Jasmine Pitts and Nele Heinrich finished fourth in their heat of the 4x400-meter relay running 3:50.18. That is the fastest 4x400m relay time for the Lady Buffs this year by more than three seconds.

BOBCAT INVITATIONAL
Five WT athletes competed at the Bobcat Invitational on Friday night at the Texas State Track & Field Stadium in San Marcos, Texas. Sierra Spinler and Morgan Aurich were nearly inseperable in the 1,500-meters as they finished 12th and 13th respectively. Spinler nearly matched her personal best from last week running 4:52.49 while Aurich ran a personal best time of 4:52.98.

Thetford made the short trip to San Marcos to compete in the 400-meter hurdles for the second straight day after competing in the 100m hurdles earlier at the Texas Relays. She finished sixth overall running 1:03.59. Norris did the same thing for the Buffs and finished 14th overall in the 400m hurdles running 55.28.

Sommer Wilder competed in the 400-meters for the second consecutive weekend as the Canyon, Texas native ran 1:00.51 to finish 44th.
