Lady Buffs Add Oklahoma State Transfer

CANYON, Texas  West Texas A&M women's basketball coach Kristen Mattio announced Monday the addition of Sydney Walton for the 2016-17 season.

Walton, a native of Perryton, Texas, played the last two seasons at Oklahoma State University where she played in 32 games with 12 starts for OSU.  The 5'8" guard will enter WT as a junior and have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

"We are very excited to add Sydney to our Lady Buff family," Mattio said.  "Sydney not only is an outstanding athlete, but has a strong mid-range and perimeter game.  She has the ability to create shots on her own, as well as for her teammates.  She will excel in our style of play and be a solid compliment to her teammates around her.  Sydney will have a strong presence on both ends of the court and we believe our fans and community are really going to enjoy watching her play and develop over the next two years."

As a freshman in 2014-15, she saw action in seven games going 3 of 6 from the field and 2 of 2 from the line scoring eight points with 11 rebounds.  Last season, Walton played in 25 games with 12 starts as she went 35 of 108 from the field, 21 of 59 from beyond the arc and 15 of 16 from the line.  She had 25 assists and 13 steals while scoring 108 points.

She earned all-state honors at Perryton as she was named the Amarillo Globe-News Golden Spread Player of the Year averaging 22.2 points per contest.  She led her team to the District 1-3A title and was a Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State selection as a sophomore.   Walton was named Newcomer of the Year as a freshman and also competed on the track team for two years.

Last season, she scored a career-high 13 points against St. Bonaventure going 5 of 10 from the field with three triples in the NCAA Tournament as she helped lead the team to a 21-10 record.

Walton joins early signees Lexy Hightower of Amarillo and Baylee Quisenberry of Devine, Texas.
