James Morton was an Eastland, Texas, High School graduate who was recruited to WT in 1985 as a 6-1, 205-pound running back out of Ranger Junior College by then-head football coach Bill Kelly.
Kelly's revamped, high-octane offense would lead the Buffs to a 6-3-1 record in their final year as a Division I team in the Missouri Valley Conference. Morton was named UPI second team All-MVC for carrying the ball 113 times for 626 yards (5.5 ypc) and scoring eleven touchdowns, including an 80-yarder at Drake in a 28-27 victory. He also caught 26 passes for 173 yards and one TD.
Morton was injured in the second game of 1986 and received a medical redshirt. He came back for the 1987 campaign and ran for 526 yards and three touchdowns and caught 36 passes for 268 yards and two TD's.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from WT in December 1987 and had a free agent tryout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1988. Morton came back to WT as a graduate assistant in 1988 and received his Master's degree in Health and Physical Education in 1989.
Then it was off to the University of Richmond in 1989 as an assistant, before returning to WT in 1990. The program was disbanded the following year. Morton served as a high school teacher and coach following his time at WTAMU.
