THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: West Texas A&M 17, UT Permian Basin 6

  • Location: Canyon, Texas (Kimbrough Memorial Stadium)
 
  • The Lead: A strong defensive performance with two big interceptions and ten points off two UT Permian Basin miscues, sparked West Texas A&M to a 17-6 victory Saturday afternoon at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Bushland native Kameron Mathis marched UTPB down the field for an early field goal converting two third downs on the drive, including a third and long pass for 48 yards to Courtney McMaryion to keep the drive alive.  A sack from senior Daelin Young and junior Lance Hyder setting up a 42-yard field goal from Bailey Giffen for a 3-0 lead.
  • The Buffs had a promising drive halted by an interception from junior quarterback Ben Arbuckle as Chris Hoad took the pass for the first interception on WT this season. 
  • Junior Isaiah Barnett picked off Mathis and returned to the UTPB 40 setting the Buffs up in plus territory late in the first quarter.
  • Early in the second, the Buffs moved down the field as sophomore Jordan Johnson scored from four yards out as two big penalties on the Falcons helped out the Buffs on the drive, including pass interference in the end zone. 
  • The game remained 7-3 at halftime as both defenses stepped up in the second quarter and forced nine punts combined through the first half and seven in the second stanza.
  • It was the first halftime lead of the season for WT as the Buffs trailed at intermission in the first two games of the year.
  • WT had seven first downs for 99 yards on 28 plays, while UTPB has 165 yards on 37 plays, including 132 yards passing from Mathis.
  • Arbuckle went seven of 15 for 80 yards and an interception in the first half.
  • WT and UTPB traded interceptions in the third quarter as junior Isaiah Barnett returned the Mathis pick 45 yards to the UTPB 19 with just over five minutes left in the third. 
  • From there, the Buffs settled for a 42-yard field goal from freshman Alex Schrag, who attempted a 56-yarder in the second quarter, which missed just right as time expired in the first half.  The field goal game WT a 10-3 lead with 3:34 left in the third quarter.
  • McMaryion caught his second bomb of the game on third down again for 44 yards following the WT field goal putting UTPB at the WT 29. 
  • Giffen missed a 48-yard field goal short. 
  • Giffen pulled UTPB within 10-6 with 10:47 left on a 40-yard field goal after a WT punt.
  • On the ensuing WT possession, the Buffs moved down the field on nine play, 75-yard drive as freshman Brandon Blair scored from 10-yards out on the ground for a 17-6 lead with 5:29 left.  It was first career rushing touchdown.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Buffs held a 10-0 lead in points off turnovers with two interceptions by Barnett, but committed three of their own.
  • WT improved to 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in Lone Star Conference play.
  • It was the 200th home victory since 1946 for WT and 167th at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
  • WT opened LSC play with its seventh win in the last eight years.
  • The Buffs handed UTPB its 12th-straight loss and tenth-straight conference loss.
  • WT amassed 222 yards of offense and 140 through the air, while recording 82 on the ground.
  • Barnett and junior Lance Hyder paced the Buffs with eight tackles each, while Barnett had the two picks and Hyder had 1.5 sacks and one tackle for loss. 
  • Senior LSC Defensive Player of the Week Daelin Young had six tackles with two sacks and three tackles for loss for 22 yards.
  • Chris Hoad had a team-high 13 tackles and 11 solo stops for UTPB with one tackle for loss and one interception.
  • Blair had 31 yards rushing on six carries and a score to lead the team, while Arbuckle went 13 of 24 for 140 yards and two interceptions. 
  • It was the first WT had not allowed a touchdown since Oct. 5, 2013 against Central State (Ohio).
